Financial Literacy: Vacation Math Project: Budgeting, Percentages, Time Zones, and More!
Life Studies, Math, Time, Decimals, Money, Measurements, Finance, Home Economics, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Projects
This Financial Literacy: Vacation Math Project will get students excited about using math in everyday life to plan something fun: a vacation! They will plan a personal vacation including a flight, hotel, transportation, food, attractions, shopping and insurance. You can assign students different budgets, start dates, and durations to differentiate, or give everyone the same constraints. Students will have to practice making trade-offs to stick to their budget. Six problem solving questions involving time zones suitcase weight, taxes & fees, timeline, and travel speed are also included. Student Instructions: First, choose your destination: _______________________ How far from your hometown is it? ____________________ How many time zones away from you is it? _________________ Now, research all of the costs involved in your vacation. Make sure to be specific and include all of the taxes and fees in each category too. Grades to Use With: This project is great for the middle grades (5-8) when students are learning about decimal operations, percentages, time zones, and basic speed calculations ( unit rate). It could also work well in a high school special education classroom. Standards: CCSS5.NBT.B.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. CCSS6.RP.A.3d Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities. CCSSMP4 Model with mathematics. Mathematically proficient students can apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. In early grades, this might be as simple as writing an addition equation to describe a situation. In middle grades, a student might apply proportional reasoning to plan a school event or analyze a problem in the community. Culture Lesson: Cultural Norms and Avoiding Stereotypes Worksheets
Social Studies, Psychology, Life Studies, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Activities, Experiments, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools
Do you want your students in grades 5-7 to learn how to become global citizens who can respect a variety of cultural norms and comprehend cross-cultural differences? Are you looking for a fun way to bring all of these ideas to life? Check out this ready-to-go lesson for your class. This 5-Page PDF is ready to print for your social studies classroom. It includes clear teacher instructions for a fun class simulation where half of your students will act out a new "class norm" (five options are provided such as not raising your hand to ask a question) that the other half of your class won't be expecting. While the simulation is happening, everyone will be working on a three page reading comprehension task. Students will read about cultural norms from around the world (slurping noodles when eating in Japan or nodding one's head to say "no" in Bulgaria). They will imagine how not knowing about the cultural norms in a place where they are travelling could lead to accidental misunderstandings. Students are also taught a simple definition of the concept of stereotypes, and they will think of how they are different from cultural norms. Finally, there is a 1-page reflection with prompts- perfect for after a class discussion. Teacher Instructions: 1. Split your class in two and talk to only one half. 2. Tell them that they will have a new “class cultural norm.” Pick one from the provided ideas. 3. When the whole class is reunited, pass out the reading page & worksheets. Students read about cultural norms and answer the questions. 4. As they work, the selected half will enact their new norm, which will confuse the other half of the class. 5. Once the point has been made, let the other half in on the secret. 6. Have a discussion about cultural norms and give students time to write a reflection about this lesson.

Math in the Real World: Personal Math Research Project for STEM, Enrichment, or Early-Finishers
Math, Percentages, Decimals, Money, Fractions, Geometry, Measurements, STEM, Research, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Activities
Personal STEM Research Project: Each student chooses a topic of interest and answers a challenging math question about it after step-by-step mini lessons teach them how. This research project can be used in many ways: - As a whole class STEM unit with 7 mini-lessons (a great idea for Friday afternoons) - As a year/term-long project for early finishers (no more copying extra math worksheets for every single lesson!) - As an enrichment activity for a small group (for those students who are ready for an extra challenge) The unit takes students through the step-by-step process using an example (how much water is needed to fill an ice rink for the NHL). The 7 steps are: o Topic: Help your students choose a topic and then narrow it down. This way your students will be invested in this project because it is about something that interests them! o Question: Brainstorm questions about that topic that need math to be solved. Help guided your students to a question that will have more than one step to solve. o Skills: Practice/learn skills needed to answer the question. Your students can use math websites like IXL, youtube videos, or their textbook to learn/review skills. o Research: Complete research to find necessary information. Students will need to find science and technology information to answer many of their questions. o Math: Put the skills and research together to find the answer! o Present: Think of a creative way to present the solution to the class. o Reflect: Take time to think back on the process. Grades: This project works well for intermediate/middle school aged students in grades 5-8. It could also be used in a high school special education classroom with extra support.

Rooms of the Home - Sorting activity
Special Resources, Special Education Needs (SEN), Speech Therapy, Life Skills, Math, Early Math, Creative Arts, Art, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities
Introducing the "Room Sorting" activity - a fun and educational task-based learning experience for children! This activity aims to help young learners understand the concept of sorting common items that belong in different rooms of a house. The activity involves a set of cards with pictures of various household items, such as a bed, clothes, dresser, pillow, lamp, and mirror. Each card is designated to a specific room, such as "bedroom," "bathroom," "kitchen," or "living room." Here is just one of the ideas you can use with this activity - The learners are presented with the activity sorting cards and are asked to sort them into different piles according to their designated room. As the children sort the cards, they will be asked to identify the objects in each card, and to explain why they belong in a particular room. This will help them to develop their vocabulary, categorization skills, and logical reasoning. Another Idea is one on one where the learner is presented with two different rooms cards and presented a sorting card one at a time and asked the learner what the sorting card is and which room it belongs. Give the card to the learner and have the learner add the sorting card to the correct room. This task-based learning approach provides a fun and engaging way for children to learn about sorting and categorizing common household items. Through this activity , children will develop their cognitive skills, communication skills, and creativity while also gaining a better understanding of the world around them. This activity is easy to create and assemble. Print, laminate and cut once. It can be stored by coil binding or three hole punched and placed in a binder. One other way of storing this activity is by hole punching and placing ring binders through the holes. Enjoy Many years of teaching IFIO girl
