The War That Saved My Life | STEAM Activities & Project-Based Learning Printable & Digital | Grades 5–7 | Teacher Guides Included I created these activities while teaching The War That Saved My Life with my 6th graders. They were curious about what life was like during World War II, so I wanted projects that connected the story to real history in meaningful ways. This resource includes five hands-on projects where students take on roles like engineer, artist, and problem-solver. They’ll try building a small model bomb shelter, design a propaganda poster, explore secret codes, work through math challenges based on evacuation trains, and investigate rationing and nutrition during the war. Each project includes teacher notes, student handouts, and most come with a short background presentation to help introduce the topic. Both printable and digital versions are included, so it works well in any classroom setting. These activities have been a great way to extend learning and keep students engaged beyond the book.

In this resource, your students will have a take home brochure to help them think of and remember ways to calm down and cope with big feelings. There are 6 sections of this resource. There are SEL coloring pages in this resource. The first section is the cover page with has a mindfulness coloring activity that students can customize to their liking. This in and of itself is a coping skill! Next you have a place where students can use their name and use the acronym of their name to help them come up and customize how they would like to calm down when they have a big feeling. For example, if the name is Jenny, they can write; J is for make a joke or listen to a joke, E is for Exercise, N is for Try something New, the other N is for Notice objects in the room (such as all the things that are green, blue, etc.) and the Y is for do yoga poses. On of the pages is the directions and the other page (flap) is for them to write their own name and customize their strategies. One of the flaps give them the acronym of CALMS which stands for C-Calming Exercises, A-Activities that distract (reading, playing a game or sport, puzzle, word search, etc) L-Look around the room (Look for all the blue objects, Look for things you see that begin with the letter A, etc.) and then M-Mindfulness practices. These are things that really bring students into the present moment. Look for 5 things you see, 4 things you hear, 3 things you feel, 2 things you smell, 1 thing you taste, etc. The S is for Sensations. Do things that make you feel different sensations that are pleasant such as place an ice pack on your forehead, go into a hot shower or hot tub, etc. Taste something sweet or spicy. These are all the things that can help someone cope with a strong feeling.

Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Area, Perimeter, and Volume

Here's a ready-to-print set of 5 math stations that can supplement a middle grads math unit about area, perimeter, and volume of right-angled shapes. Math centers or stations are a wonderful way to get your students engaged in what they learn as they move around the classroom and work cooperatively with their classmates. Even when your students are in the intermediate or middle school grades, they can benefit from a wide variety of teaching techniques including the implementation of stations or learning centres! But creating these stations takes a lot of time, so let me do it for you! Station 1: This stations gives students four word problems to sovle that all involve geometry skills about area, perimeter, and volume. Station 2: This station gives students hand-on practice as they measure the volume of a real cardboard box. You will need to provide a few boxes and rulers for your students. Station 3: This station lets students design a backyard with different zones of grass, cement, a pool and more. They calculate the area and cost of each zone. Station 4: This station lets students practice calculating area and perimeter of complex shapes and they can try an online game! Station 5: This station lets students apply their knowledge to a real world math problem, and they practice carefully explaining their mathematical thinking in pictures and words. Break your students into 5 groups and have them rotate through the centers in 15 minute increments. Allow students to start at one station and move to another at their own pace as long as no station gets too crowded. Assign only one or two stations that work best for your students. Give a station as a quick review or homework assignment. Grades to Use With: These stations work well in grades 4-7 classes or high school special education. PERSPECTIVE TAKINGcan be challenging for some children. Noticing and understanding other people's facial expressions, is an important factor in good perspective taking. The ability to take other's perspectives is an important life skill. It helps us to GET ALONG WITH OTHERS, and ADJUST OUR BEHAVIOR when / if necessesary, in order to make people feel comfortable around us. "What Are They Feeling?" These 30 PHOTO CARDS will help children practice the important perspective taking skill of understanding what others may be feeling, based on their facial expressions and body language. Students will also be able to gain a greater understanding of why people may have different feelings, and react differently, even though they are in the same situation. Additionally, this activity helps children to identify their own emotions and what might make them feel that way. Photos include: Set 1:Pictures show a close up of a child’s face. The student is asked what the child in the photo is feeling, what clues they have about this, i.e. frown, squinted eyes, etc. and what might make someone feel this way. Set 2:Pictures are showing a child’s face and hands, for some additional clues about how they may be feeling. The student is asked to think about what the child in the picture may be feeling, based on the facial expression and hand gestures. Set 3: Pictures show children demonstrating various emotions through facial expressions AND body language.
