Real-Life Integers: Working with Integers & Number Lines Grade 6 Math

Real-Life Integers: Working with Integers & Number Lines Grade 6 Math
Math, Number Lines, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Subtraction, Numbers, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Worksheets

Integers are everywhere in our lives! Get your students excited about learning about integers including using number lines and finding the difference between integers in a variety of real-life situations. This is perfect for students in grade six who are first learning about rational numbers. Social Media: Up Votes and Down Votes: You will read each statement one at a time to your class. Then ask for upvotes (and count the hands) and ask for downvotes (and count the hands). Remind students they can abstain from voting on a statement if they are ambivalent. If you think it will help your class, have students vote anonymously by putting their heads down. Record the upvotes and downvotes for each of the 10 statements. Students complete the math (which is really adding integers) to get each statement’s final score. (Extension: This activity can lead to a mini-lesson on facts vs. opinions.) Cities: Temperatures and Elevations: Students will need internet access for this activity. They will explore two cities: one with a positive temperature in degrees Celsius and one with a negative temperature in degrees Celsius. Using a number line, they will compare these two temperatures. Then, they must find the elevation (in meters) of six cities around the world to complete three math questions. Sports: Golf and Football: Students will apply adding and subtracting integers to a golf game to calculate the player’s score above or below par. Then, they use integers to calculate if a football team scores a touchdown. (Extension: Students can create their own football scenario. They can choose a starting point, make up 5 plays, and trade with a friend. ) Financial Literacy: Bank Account: Students add and subtract integers to keep a running bank balance in an account with an overdraft. They see how purchases reduce your balance and deposits increase your balance. I have included two versions, one with decimals and one with whole numbers only.

Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Cities, sports, challenges, & wins!

Olympic Games Writing Challenge | Cities, sports, challenges, & wins!
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Games, Activities

Getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. The Olympic games inspire so many young people. In this narrative writing assignment, students will choose their city and sport, as well as what went wrong and what went well. Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Don't forget to check out the Chef's Toolbox, Superhero's Toolbox, and Astronaut's Toolbox activities for more fun! These activities can be used with a whole class in addition to the writing challenge printable. This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders who enjoy learning about space and demonstrating their knowledge of it. By using the included matrix to choose the setting, challenge, and characters in their story, they'll use the freedom afforded them to create something they love. *Note, some learners may require a basic explanation of what stocks, investments, and savings accounts are. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4 extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

What is a Lightyear? Activity

What is a Lightyear? Activity
Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Space, Grade 5, 6, 7, Activities

Students will explore and discover what a lightyear is with this What is a Lightyear? Activity . Teacher Instructions: The unit of astronomical distance, light-years, can be a difficult but essential concept for students to comprehend. This activity will get your students moving and, hopefully, help them understand what a light-year is. Step One: Give your definition of light-years to your students and explain why this is important for them to understand. I like to tell my students that Proxima Centauri is our nearest star, and it is 154.243 light years away. Let’s pretend we have a friend on Proxima Centauri right now. If we went outside and waved to him, when would he see us waving? He would not see us waving until 4.243 years from now. that is because it takes light 4.243 years to reach him. Step Two: Make copies of the table attached and hand out to your students. Clear some room in your class or go outside. Line your students up and tell them to run for one second. Have them look at how far they traveled and tell them that that is considered their run-second. Have them line up again and tell them to start running. Time them running for one minute. Have them measure the distance they traveled. Tell them to record the distance on their recording table next to “my run minute.” Bring them back into class and instruct them to figure out their run-week, run-month, and run-year. Conclude by telling your students that their run-year is how far they would travel in one year. A light-year is how far light travels in one year.

Force and Motion Science Experiment

Force and Motion Science Experiment
Science, Physics, Grade 3, 4, 5, Experiments, Activities

We all know that science is learned best with our hands! When we have the opportunity to really explore scientific concepts with an interactive approach, the learning just sticks! More than that, students love the chance to do experiments . This is a Force and Motion Science Experiment for your students to take part in. It may be used best with 3rd – 5th grade students. Students will work with a set of balls to apply what they know about force and motion. Students will complete the 2 page printable along the way. They will begin by making a hypothesis, as scientists do, before engaging in the experiment. Students will hypothesize which ball they believe will need the most wind-force for motion and which ball will need the least wind-force. You may choose to have your students decide on this hypothesis individually or in small groups. When students have wrapped up their hypothesis, they will move forward into the experiment portion. Students will follow the directions on page 1 to test out the force and motion of each ball. There is space for them to test out 6 balls. Your class may love completing this in small groups or with a partner. On page 2, they will reflect on the experiment by writing their particular outcome and formulating a conclusion about the wind-force needed to put balls in motion. I hope you enjoy! This ready-to-print set of 5 stations or math centres will supplement a middle school geometry unit about place value: including numbers from the hundred millions to the millionths. I have included lots of real-life examples such as populations of countries around the world and actual Olympic luge results that are measured to the thousandth of a second. Math stations are an excellent way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work cooperatively with their peers. Even when students are in intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations to make math class more interactive. Station 1: Students can work collaboratively to solve four word problems about place value. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students explore decimal place value to the millionths with a random number generating dice game. (supplies needed: 2-sided counter or coin AND a 10-sided die to generate numbers) Station 3: Students explore the populations of countries to practice place value skills such as rounding, expanded form, and comparing large numbers. (supplies needed: access to the internet to find the populations) Station 4: Students compare real times (measured to the thousandths) from the men’s luge at the 2018 Winter Olympics. They identify and compare different decimal place values. Station 5: Students explain their mathematical thinking in words and pictures to answer a math journal prompt. (supplies needed: tablets or computers for online game extension) ***Answer Key Included*** Grades to Use With: These stations are designed for middle grades students (grades 5-7) or high school special education classrooms. If you enjoy these math stations, check out the others in my store for your middle school math class: Factors and Multiples Percent, Decimals.
