Social Studies, Economics, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans, Activities

Introduction to Personal Finance: Dive into MONEY! This lesson serves as the kickstart to my personal finance module. While it's primarily an introductory session, it can seamlessly fit into any personal finance curriculum. The core theme explores the complexities of a barter-based economy and delves into the reasons we pivot to using money, accompanied by a precise definition of money. It's a dynamic and captivating lesson. It includes a light-hearted skit, where students, and optionally the teacher, illustrate the pitfalls of bartering. Following the skit, the spotlight shifts to understanding the essence of money and its significance. With hands-on demonstrations, students get a chance to actively participate, ensuring they remain engrossed and involved throughout the session. What is included? -The Goat Farmer and Chicken Farmer skit (props not included :-) -a power point that will define money and the challenges of a barter economy -a Federal Reserve bank publication titled: "MONEY", this is a must have resource when teaching about money! I use this resource in my 7th grade classroom, but it could be used in almost any middle or high school class. This has been a successful lesson in my economics class for almost 20 years. Teaching economics is fun!

Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read

Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read
ELA, Literature, Reading, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities

The purpose of this 6-page lesson, Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read is to teach students in grades 4 through 9 how to browse for a book to read. Many of our students are not sure how to choose a book to read. They might not have many books in their homes or they might not go to a library or bookstore. We have to teach our students how to browse a book to see if they might want to read it. I take my students to our school media center /library once every five or six weeks, and we always book browse. Sometimes we browse a specific genre, such as Historical Fiction or Narrative Nonfiction. Other times it might be Newbury Awards or bestsellers. Students enjoy this activity, and over time, they feel very comfortable browsing for books on their own.Every time we go to the library after this first time, students ask if we can do a book browse. Some teachers might think it’s a waste of a period, but I am an avid book browser at the library and in bookstores, and I have found many authors that I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t browsed. The structure that this lesson provides is very useful if you’re doing a genre study or a literature circle. But even if you just want your students to have a book of no particular genre, giving them choices within a somewhat limited framework (rather than having them wander among the shelves looking or pretending to look), helps them make informed choices and gives them some agency at the same time. This activity offers students the opportunity to find books they might enjoy. Although this lesson is specifically designed for a school library, if you have an extensive classroom library, you can easily book browse in your classroom. I have produced a number of book reports that you might be interested in. Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report and Essay
ELA, Literature, Writing, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities, Projects

Many students don’t realize that some or many of the movies that they love were first books. They are often surprised to find out that the movie came second or that there's even a book the movie is based on. In the 47-page Common Core standards-aligned resource, Book into Movie Project: Compare and Contrast Book Report, and Essay students in 6th-9th grade will read a book, watch the movie that is based on or adapted from the book, and then write a book review in which they take a stand on which is better and why. The comprehensive lesson plan and guide provides teachers with everything they need to give 6th through 12th grade students the tools to critically analyze the similarities and differences between the two, including helping them to support their claim with evidence and analysis. Because the project offers many handouts, a sample student essay to analyze, and a writing template, your diverse student population of English Language Learners and Resource Students can be as successful as your regular ed and GATE students. After completing this project, many students will realize that although they liked the movie, they preferred the book for a variety of reasons, including visualizing the characters and settings themselves and explaining why that made the book better. They will notice that they didn’t like how the movie adaptors changed aspects of the plots or characters, and they offer an analysis of these omissions and their impact on the storyline. They will react positively when the movie includes something they really liked or when what they visualized matches up with the adaptation. Some will prefer the movie over the book, and they will be able to articulate why. Overall, students have told me that this is one of their favorite book projects.
