Sight Words Fluency Learning Game | Fry's 1st 100 Words
ELA, Language Development, Spelling, Preschool, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, Activities, Games
Sight Words Fluency Game for Kindergarten through Grade 3 This sight words learning game helps build reading fluency with Fry's first 100 high frequency words. Students race to identify and "swat" the sight words called out by the teacher. The game can be played whole group or in small groups. Print the words on cardstock, laminate for durability, and cut apart to make game pieces. Provide each student with a fly swatter. The teacher calls out a sight word and students race to find and cover the matching word with their swatter. The first student to identify and swat the correct word wins the card. For more of a challenge, cover the swatters with an additional piece of laminated cardstock. Attach with packing tape or glue. The cover forces students to visually focus when searching for the called out word. Play the basic game without velcro for a quicker pace. Or add velcro dots to the word cards and fly swatters so the card sticks when swatted for easier scoring. Adjust the difficulty by calling out simple CVC words or longer words from Fry's list. This printable sight word game offers a fun and interactive way to build fluency with the first 100 essential words. It's perfect for whole group, small group, or independent practice in grades K-3.

Types of Paragraphs - Make a Magazine Project: Narrative, Descriptive, Persuasive, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, How-To Paragraphs
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Strategies, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities, Projects
Types of Paragraphs: Make a Magazine Project: Narrative, Descriptive, Persuasive, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, How-To Paragraphs. This fun and engaging mini-unit helps teach paragraph writing while keeping students interested because they are creating their very own magazine! How to Use: Print a hamburger paragraph handout for each student. Review the parts of an effective paragraph: topic sentence, juicy details, and concluding sentence. Then teach your students about the six types of paragraphs they are going to learn how to write: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and how-to. Each kind of paragraph will be a different part of the magazine. A persuasive paragraph becomes a letter to the editor. A narrative paragraph will be a personal story. A descriptive paragraph will be a travel article. A compare and contrast paragraph will be a product review. A cause and effect paragraph will be a current events article, and a how-to paragraph will be a home maintenance piece. Use one period of class time to draft each paragraph. Students get a handout with some sample ideas and then come up with their own. They draft a 5-sentence paragraph that will become their "article." After each draft, show students the editing handout, and encourage them to edit their own work or trade with a friend. You can also have students hand in their drafts each day for you to edit as well. Once students have their six edited drafts, they can either type them OR write good copies on the included templates. Put them all together, make a title page, and each student now has their own magazine! Extensions: Early finishers can make a crossword puzzle using an online website, or create their own advertisement for their magazine! Grades to Use With: This project is designed for students who are learning how to write effective paragraphs in grades 2-5. What's Included: A total of 16 pages in ready-to-print PDF format Title Page Hamburger Paragraph Handout 6 Draft Pages Proofreading Checklist 7 Pages of Templates for Good Copies

Writing Center Words & Write-the Room Activity – SUMMER
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Centers, Activities
Help your students write about summer fun with these sixteen summer themed words and images for your K-2 classroom Writing Center . Words with images include flip flops, float, goggles, ice cream, lemonade, pool, splash, sprinkler, swim, swim shorts, swimsuit, sun, sunglasses, sunscreen, super soaker, and watermelon. My students LOVE the Writing Center ! I have lots of tools and “help” available for them, plus these themed word pages which they adore. I actually print two of each, so there is no fuss about having to share, and I laminate them before placing in the Writing Center for durability. Having laminated themed word pages, students can easily grab one and use it to help write their stories. Page 4 of the PDF is for the Writing Center . Print and laminate one or two and place it in the Writing Center for your students to access as needed. Also included are 16 cards for a Write–the–Room activity if you choose to use them. (I have only used this with my Kindergarten class.) These cards are four-per-page, with the same words and images used for the Writing Center . Pages 5-8 of the PDF are cards for use as a Write-the-Room activity. You may wish to laminate for durability to be able to use year-after-year, and use sticky tack (poster putty) to mount it to walls, bookshelves, file cabinets, etc. I find this is easier than tape. On of my grade-level teachers prints in gray scale, tapes them up, and then lets students take them home after use. Whatever works best for you. Recording pages for the Write-the-Room are included on pages 9 and 10. Page 9 is a full-size recording sheet, and page 10 has 2 half-size recording sheets if you use mini-clip boards like I do. Please note - the first three pages are for "packaging" purposes.
