Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Identify countries from a defining feature - the country that connects Europe and Asia, the country of pyramids and the Nile, the country made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Recognise major world cities and landmarks by a single distinguishing detail such as the CN Tower, the tallest building in the world, or a fairy-tale castle in Germany
Define eight physical geography terms precisely enough to tell a bay from a strait and a plateau from a hill
Teaching tips
No word bank is printed, so a class meeting these topics for the first time will want an atlas or a map on the wall while they work
Use the Landforms puzzle as a vocabulary check after a physical geography lesson
Set the Did You Know fact as the extension: each is a single sentence that supports a short piece of writing or a display card
Skills covered
Geographic recall - clues identify countries by a single feature, such as the country in South America home to Machu Picchu or the one known for technology and K-pop.
Physical geography vocabulary - the Landforms puzzle asks students to name a canyon, plateau, delta, glacier, hill, bay, strait and isthmus from short definitions.
Spelling under constraint - answers such as Neuschwanstein Castle, Marrakech, Chichen Itza and Isthmus have to be spelled letter-perfect to fit the grid.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
Are the clues definitions or facts to recall?
Both, depending on the puzzle. The Landforms puzzle gives pure definitions - "A narrow body of water that connects two larger bodies of water" - while the countries, cities and landmarks puzzles work from a distinguishing fact, such as "A Canadian city with the CN Tower" or "An ancient pyramid in Mexico". No word bank is printed on any puzzle.
What are the Did You Know facts for?
One heads each puzzle as an extension hook: Canada having more lakes than any other country, Venice's 150 canals and nearly 400 bridges, Mount Fuji last erupting in 1707, glaciers holding about 69% of the world's fresh water, Alaska's coastline exceeding all other states combined, and Holi in India involving thrown colour powders.
How far do the puzzles range beyond the obvious answers?
Well beyond. Alongside Chicago, Venice and Texas the deck asks for Marrakech, Bangkok, Shanghai, Lisbon, Chichen Itza, Neuschwanstein Castle, Angkor Wat, isthmus and plateau - names and terms a class will usually need a map or a prior lesson to reach.
