Jails Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia

Jails Reading Comprehension Passage - Cored Ed Encyclopedia
ELA, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Pre-Reading, Language Development, Vocabulary, History, Social Studies, Law, Spelling, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Writing Prompts, Assessments, Quizzes and Tests, Quizzes, Lesson Plans

This Jails reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Quick pause—thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. Download links and encyclopedia index available here. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question and additional facts. Answer Key There are answers for the multiple-choice questions, written response questions have sample answers, vocabulary answers and if there is a summary question then a sample summary will be provided as well. Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Jails Genre: Nonfiction (informational text) Subject: Social Studies (Civics) / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: What jails are and how they differ from prisons Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): S What This Lesson Teaches Best Explains what a jail is and why people may be there for a short time (waiting for a court date or serving short sentences). Uses history to show how jails were used long ago (England, 1166) and why the spelling “gaol” appeared. Clarifies the difference between “jail” and “prison” in formal American and Canadian English (pretrial custody/shorter sentences vs. longer sentences). Connects jails to community routines and civic values (rules, safety checks, fairness, harm prevention, justice). Builds understanding of how word choice and definitions matter when discussing systems and government roles (counties vs. state/federal). Learning Goals Describe what a jail is and give two reasons people may be held there. Explain how early jails in England were used and what “gaol” means in the passage. Explain what changed in the 1790s in the United States, according to the text. Compare a jail and a prison using details from the passage. Identify examples of routines and rules in jails and explain why they matter. Key Vocabulary From the Text booking — recording a new person in jail. cells — small rooms where people are held. trial — a court process to decide a case. convicted — found guilty of a crime. reform — help someone change for the better. This Aztecs reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Lesson Snapshot Title: Aztecs Genre: Nonfiction (informational passage) Subject: Social Studies (Ancient Civilizations) / Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: Building lake-city life and what happened later Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): S What This Lesson Teaches Best How a wandering Nahua group (the Mexica) chose a home based on a sign and began building a city on a lake. How people adapted to living on water using chinampas , canals, and causeways to grow food and move around. How Triple Alliance (between Tenochtitlan , Texcoco , and Tlacopan ) helped the capital grow powerful through victories and tribute. Using headings to track a sequence: founding and growth, alliance and power, then conflict and destruction, and what remains today. Connecting past to present by noting how the eagle-and-cactus story lives on and how archaeologists still uncover remains beneath modern streets. Learning Goals Identify the sign the Mexica saw that helped them choose their home. Describe how builders expanded the island and how chinampas helped crops grow near home. Explain how canals and causeways helped the city get fresh water and connect to the shore. Describe how tribute (examples named in the text) helped the capital grow powerful. Describe what the passage says happened after Spanish explorers arrived, including the year the city fell. Explain what the passage says exists today where the city once stood. Key Vocabulary From the Text chinampas — raised garden beds packed with mud. causeways — broad raised roads that connect land and water. tribute — goods sent to rulers as payment. levees — walls or banks that help stop floods. archaeologists — people who uncover and study the past. Lesson Snapshot Title: Batteries Genre: Nonfiction (informational passage) Subject: Science (Physical Science / Electricity) Primary Topic: How batteries store energy and changed over time Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): T What This Lesson Teaches Best Explains what a battery does and how it powers devices when connected in a circuit (electrons moving through a wire to light a bulb or spin a motor). Introduces key electricity ideas in context (plus/minus ends guiding the “flow” the right way; current moving for a while). Gives a clear mini-history of batteries, from 1800’s “voltaic pile” to later “wet cells,” “dry cells,” and rechargeable batteries. Connects science to real-world uses, from small watch batteries to lithium-ion packs and room-size battery banks for the power grid. Highlights responsible use: batteries don’t last forever, so careful charging and recycling can help protect people and the planet. Learning Goals Identify what the passage says is stored inside a battery and what makes electricity move in a circuit. Explain, using the text, how electrons help a flashlight make a bright beam. Describe what Alessandro Volta built in 1800 and what materials were stacked. Compare “wet cells” and “dry cells” using details from the passage about carrying and spilling. Explain what makes a rechargeable battery different, based on how the passage describes “pushing” chemical changes backward. Describe how batteries are used today, including small devices and large battery banks on the power grid. Key Vocabulary From the Text electrons — tiny particles that can move through a wire. circuit — a path electricity travels through to do work. current — electricity moving steadily in a path. rechargeable — able to be filled up again with electricity. recycling — using materials again instead of throwing them away. Limerick Poem Lesson Plan, Template, Examples & Rubric Poetry Writing

Limerick Poem Lesson Plan, Template, Examples & Rubric Poetry Writing
ELA, Poetry, Literature, Homeschool Templates, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, Centers, Activities, Graphic Organizers, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans, Rubrics, Worksheets & Printables

Ever tried teaching a limerick poem and found your students either stuck on rhyming… or going completely off track? This resource was created to make teaching limericks much more manageable. It gives your students a clear structure to follow, while still leaving room for the fun and creativity that limerick poetry is known for. Instead of guessing what to write next, students are guided through the process step by step, using examples and templates that help everything “click”. What's Included A detailed lesson plan you can pick up and use A Limerick poem example to model expectations (color and blackline posters) Interactive notebook templates to support each stage A clear explanation of the AABBA rhyme pattern An assessment rubric to keep marking simple A publishing sheet that would make the perfect bulletin board display to celebrate National Poetry Month Perfect For Grades 3-6 Poetry lessons Writing units Literacy rotations Homeschool learning Small group or whole-class teaching How You Might Use It Start by reading a few limericks together (your students will love the humor), then break down the structure as a class. From there, they can use the templates to plan and write their own poems before sharing. Skills Covered Poetry writing Rhyme and rhythm (AABBA pattern) Vocabulary development Sentence structure Creative expression Limericks can be tricky—especially when students are trying to juggle rhyme, rhythm, and structure all at once. Having a template in front of them makes a big difference. I’ve found that once students understand the pattern, they actually enjoy the process (and the silly results that come with it!). It’s also a great way to build confidence in students who usually struggle to get started with writing. So, if you’re looking for a way to teach limerick poetry that gives your students enough structure to succeed—but still lets them have fun with it—this is an easy addition to your writing lessons.

Lesson Plan Included Customized lesson plan for this lesson is included. Lesson Snapshot Title: Antarctica Genre: Nonfiction (informational passage) Subject: Science / Geography (Polar environments; exploration & research) Primary Topic: Exploration, South Pole, treaty, and ice core science Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): S Support pages noted in the PDF: visualization and pre-reading trivia (pp. 1–2), mixed questions (p. 4), vocabulary activities (p. 5), creative writing (p. 6), extension activities + summary box (p. 7), answer key (p. 8). Support-page QA notes: The vocabulary activity includes “Expedition,” which does not appear in the passage; one mixed question asks why compasses “spin strangely,” which the passage does not explain. What This Lesson Teaches Best How Antarctica went from a blank spot on maps to a confirmed icy continent described by explorers. Key physical features of the continent: cold, dry, windy conditions; little inland snow; land “high above sea level” like a “frozen plateau.” A short exploration timeline using dates and evidence (1820 reports of ice shelves; 1895 people stepped onto the continent). How journeys toward the South Pole were described (sleds, dogs, strange compasses) and what happened in December 1911 and afterward. Why international science cooperation matters there, including the International Geophysical Year, the Antarctic Treaty, and what ice cores can reveal through layers. Learning Goals Students will describe why early mapmakers could not point to land far south “with certainty.” Students will identify details that describe Antarctica’s inland climate and land shape (dry, windy, little snow; “frozen plateau”). Students will retell key events from the passage’s timeline using dates (1820, 1895, 1911, 1959). Students will explain what ships reported seeing in 1820 and how the author describes the coastal environment.
