Extreme Environments: Integrated Middle School Science and ELA Debate Activity
ELA, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Library, Strategies, Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Activities

Extreme Environments: Integrated Middle School Science and ELA Debate Activity This assignment is a great way to integrate earth science learning and the English language arts skills of speaking and listening. Students think of relevant reasons for and against humans exploring extreme environments such as the desert, space, and the deep ocean. How to Use: You can split your class into “for” and “against” before they brainstorm and research or afterwards (depending on if you want them to gather information for both sides or not). Then, you can have an informal class debate/discussion with students from each side presenting ideas and rebuttals. Finally, students sum up their personal thoughts in a paragraph. Will they side with what they presented, or will they be swayed by the other side's points? Student Instructions: Extreme environments like the deep ocean, space, volcanoes, and the arctic are full of wonderful sights and discoveries. However, there are downsides to allowing humans to explore these locations. Brainstorm and research reasons for and against allowing human exploration in extreme environments. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in the middle grades (5-8) who are studying extreme environments or space in earth science or science class. It could also be used in English class to target speaking and listening learning standards. Finally, it could be used in high school special education classrooms as well. What's Included: 3 Page PDF that is ready to print! 1) Title Page and Teacher Instructions 2) Graphic Organizer for Note Taking and Research 3) Paragraph Response Prompt If you enjoy this extreme environment lesson, check out some others in my store: Grace Under Pressure Extreme Environments Technology Design and Persuasive Presentation Extreme Environments Reading Comprehension and Triple Venn Diagram How Do Astronauts Meets Their Needs in Outer Space? Groundhog Day Math Coordinate Plane Pixel Art Activity

Groundhog Day Math Coordinate Plane Pixel Art Activity
Math, Graphing, Grade 5, 6, 7, Activities

Groundhog Day | Coordinate Plane Mystery Picture Activity is a no-prep, self-checking Cartesian Plane mystery picture activity. This is a great way for students to have fun while practicing. Students will practice writing ordered pairs for 20 points on the coordinate plane with this fun digital activity using Google Sheets. When I used it as an eighth grade sub plan, the children greatly enjoyed it. As they get their answers right, the mystery picture will be unveiled! This is a self-check practice where students will know when they arrive at the right answer. It is easy to implement, as students can access it through the link embedded on the PDF. This activity may be implemented after a lesson, as a closing activity, an exit ticket or even a formative assessment . Additionally, students may work individually, together in pairs, or even in groups, to arrive at the right answer and have the picture reveal. It can also be set up as a center activity or for a tutoring session with individual students. If there is no ability to set up this activity as google sheet for individual students, it can always just be printed out for students to provide the answers and then the teacher can show the mystery picture to all students. This is a great resource, easy to implement, engaging for students, self-check, and just as important, a fun way for students to practice with a fun theme!
