Desert Biome Activity
Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities
In this activity, students think of animals that live in the desert. I have provided examples to help guide the students in the right direction. For the first page, where students name animals in the desert, you could complete that whole group. Make sure to have some handy to write down yourself if students are struggling to think of some. Students will then pick one animal that can survive in the desert and write down its adaptations. If you have some struggling students, you could guide them in a small group where they all have the same animal and adaptations listed. If you want them to use technology, now is a good time to have them look up adaptations for their chosen animal. You could also have them get together for a few minutes with other students who chose the same animal and have them discuss the adaptations together. Students also need to come up with information on the environment in the desert. Students will draw their animal in the desert. Tell them to make the animal the focus, so it should be drawn big. There are a couple of pages provided. This project can be done altogether in one sitting, or you could do the writing pages one day, and then have students do the drawing another day.

Fun and engaging Hands on Learning Activity for Pre-K through First. Also good for ESL, Resource, or SPED. Case Matching Clip Cards for Fall/Autumn with an adorable scarecrow. Simple to make and use. Answers print on the back of cards with double-sided printing. This allows for easy, self-checking, independent work! Students will identify the letters on each card, and attach a clothespin or clip to their answer. Then flip the card to check. Great for fine motor development. Use this activity in your literacy centers or small groups. Put them in task boxes or individual work baskets. Also a good take home or early-finisher activity. EASY clean up. I teach my students to take all the task cards and the clips out of the task box. As they clip, flip, check answer, they put it back IN the box! They use one clip over and over. I have seen teachers use one clip per card, but that is just a lot of work. 26 clip it and flip it cards. 4 cards per page. Cards are made with straight-line cutting; which makes it easier for you. Large cards, with the clip selection at the bottom, making it easier for left- or right-handed students. Clip it and Flip it cards help develop/strengthen fine motor skills while working on letter identification/case matching. I print card on heavy card stock, laminate for durability, and cut. I place all cards with 3 or 4 clothespins in a task box to add to my center selections. My students LOVE Clip an Flip cards! Teachers love the ease of use and so easy to swap out sets of cards to keep centers interesting and students engaged. One teacher used them as an assessment tool - she had students in a small group at her table, and gave them each a few cards and transparent counters. She used a checklist for marking. You will download a PDF of 18 pages. Print pages 5 through 18 double-sided. If your printer does not allow double-sided printing, print odd pages first, then place them in the printer and print even pages.

All learners of phonics, including young children, SEN/special needs, ESL etc... Aims and Objectives Some children, when starting to learn about the long /a-e/ sound will start to make every /a/ into a long /a-e/ sound. While this is common among all children, some children need more help to overcome this difficulty. Therefore, this game has two aims: 1.To help children to be able to hear the long vowel sound a-e in words 2.To help children understand that some words have a short /a/ and some have a long /a-e/; the child must listen to hear which word has which - not guess. How to play: This is a game for two players. The teacher should watch if two children are playing together. Each player takes a game board which will indicate whether the player should listen for words with a short /a/ sound or a long /a-e/ sound. The selected picture cards are scattered on the table face down. Players take it in turns to choose a picture card. The player says the word and listens to the vowel sound. Is it short /a/, or long /a-e/? If it belongs on the player’s board, it is placed on one of the oblongs. If not, it is returned to the table, face down. The winner is the player who completes his/her board first. Teaching tips: Support children to sound words out/blend them as needed. Help children to hear the vowel sound by emphasizing it and stretching it out. Help the child to do this as well. Have fun - as this eases children over those tricky spots! What is included? 1 PDF with 2 game boards and 20 pictures all in colour and ink saving black and white. See more fun phonic games in the Lilibette's Resources store!
