Sonoran Desert | Children's Journaling Set | Nature Journal

Sonoran Desert | Children's Journaling Set | Nature Journal
Science, Life Sciences, Animals, Not Grade Specific, Activities

A beautiful nature journaling set for children. Youngsters can combine my own watercolor pre-painted characters (coyote, roadrunner, quail, reptiles, and cacti) with the stunningly illustrated background scene. The scene has plenty of space for children to add their own drawings and writing to create wonderful journal pages to treasure. This set ideally lends itself to the study of animals and plants in North America's deserts, record observations in nature around you, or combine with study from books and objects. The sheet of illustrations makes ideal additions to nature displays. To create a tactile finished item I highly recommend printing onto high-quality paper, I like to use watercolor paper as this also allows the children to add their own paintings to the pages they create and means that every piece looks and feels like an original painting.

Writing Center Words & Write-the Room Activity – BEACH

Writing Center Words & Write-the Room Activity – BEACH
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Centers, Activities

Help your students write about fun at the beach with these sixteen beach themed words and images for your K-2 classroom Writing Center . Words with images include ball, beach bag, bucket, crab, chair, flippers, sandcastle, seagull, shells, shovel, starfish, swim shorts, swimsuit, surfboard, towel, and umbrella. My students LOVE the Writing Center ! I have lots of tools and “help” available for them, plus these themed word pages which they adore. I actually print two of each, so there is no fuss about having to share, and I laminate them before placing in the Writing Center for durability. Having laminated themed word pages, students can easily grab one and use it to help write their stories. Page 4 of the PDF is for the Writing Center . Print and laminate one or two and place it in the Writing Center for your students to access as needed. Also included are 16 cards for a Write–the–Room activity if you choose to use them. (I have only used this with my Kindergarten class.) These cards are four-per-page, with the same words and images used for the Writing Center . Pages 5-8 of the PDF are cards for use as a Write-the-Room activity. You may wish to laminate for durability to be able to use year-after-year, and use sticky tack (poster putty) to mount it to walls, bookshelves, file cabinets, etc. I find this is easier than tape. On of my grade-level teachers prints in gray scale, tapes them up, and then lets students take them home after use. Whatever works best for you. Recording pages for the Write-the-Room are included on pages 9 and 10. Page 9 is a full-size recording sheet, and page 10 has 2 half-size recording sheets if you use mini-clip boards like I do. Please note - the first three pages are for "packaging" purposes.

Math in the Real World: Personal Math Research Project for STEM, Enrichment, or Early-Finishers

Math in the Real World: Personal Math Research Project for STEM, Enrichment, or Early-Finishers
Math, Percentages, Decimals, Money, Fractions, Geometry, Measurements, STEM, Research, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Activities

Personal STEM Research Project: Each student chooses a topic of interest and answers a challenging math question about it after step-by-step mini lessons teach them how. This research project can be used in many ways: - As a whole class STEM unit with 7 mini-lessons (a great idea for Friday afternoons) - As a year/term-long project for early finishers (no more copying extra math worksheets for every single lesson!) - As an enrichment activity for a small group (for those students who are ready for an extra challenge) The unit takes students through the step-by-step process using an example (how much water is needed to fill an ice rink for the NHL). The 7 steps are: o Topic: Help your students choose a topic and then narrow it down. This way your students will be invested in this project because it is about something that interests them! o Question: Brainstorm questions about that topic that need math to be solved. Help guided your students to a question that will have more than one step to solve. o Skills: Practice/learn skills needed to answer the question. Your students can use math websites like IXL, youtube videos, or their textbook to learn/review skills. o Research: Complete research to find necessary information. Students will need to find science and technology information to answer many of their questions. o Math: Put the skills and research together to find the answer! o Present: Think of a creative way to present the solution to the class. o Reflect: Take time to think back on the process. Grades: This project works well for intermediate/middle school aged students in grades 5-8. It could also be used in a high school special education classroom with extra support.

How to Make Pumpkin Pie | Writing and Sequencing Activity

How to Make Pumpkin Pie | Writing and Sequencing Activity
ELA, Writing, Grade 1, 2, 3, Activities

This fall-themed resource leverages students' interest in pumpkin pie around Thanksgiving to teach early writers the basics of crafting step-by-step "how-to" explanations. The materials creatively break down the cooking process into simple sequences designed to motivate young students. Various printable templates guide children to color, cut out, organize, and describe the methodology for making pumpkin pie from scratch. The packet incorporates two leveled writing checklists suitable for kindergarten through early elementary grades to reinforce core instructional writing skills. A sample how-to paragraph models the desired format while a fall-inspired sequencing word bank introduces key transition vocabulary. Vivid pictorial cards demonstrate the baking process and corresponding word cards allow for matching games or displays. Primary workbook-style templates encourage students to enumerate or depict the necessary kitchen tools, ingredients, safety considerations, and chronological steps required to make the pie. Extensions guide students to invent their own fall dessert or describe favorite holiday treats. A final draft pie template offers the possibility of designing mini pumpkin pies if classroom cooking facilities permit. With opportunities to grow fine motor abilities through coloring, sequencing events, copying transitional phrases, controlled writing practice, and crafting festive narratives, students gain confidence applying fundamental how-to writing techniques to an appetizing topic that stimulates imagination during the fall season. The cross-curricularfocus creatively integrates science and literacy learning through hands-on engagement. This educational product equips teachers with abundant resources to guide students through crafting procedural "how-to" texts using the fun example of making pumpkin pie. Two colorful anchor charts define the key ingredients of quality procedural writing and offer transition words to sequence steps. Editing checklists, provided at two levels, enable learners to self-evaluate work before publishing final drafts. A sample "How to Make Pumpkin Pie" models conventions like imperatives, chronological order and materials lists. Sequencing tasks with accompanying illustration cards ─ available with and without text ─ reinforce ordering of baking steps. Writing templates scaffold multiple angles, from brainstorming needed ingredients to recounting personal experiences following recipes. Budding authors draft procedural passages within primary-lined booklets showcasing pictures to color. Final publications shine with the option to cut out mini pumpkin pies demonstrating the delicious outcome!
