Dead Poets Society (1989): Complete Movie Guide

Dead Poets Society (1989): Complete Movie Guide
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities

"Dead Poets Society" is a 1989 American drama film directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams. The movie is set in the conservative and strict Welton Academy, an all-boys preparatory school in Vermont, in the 1950s. The film follows the story of a group of students who are inspired by their English teacher, John Keating (played by Williams), to challenge the traditional ways of thinking and to seize the day. Keating encourages his students to think for themselves, to be independent and creative, and to follow their dreams. As the story unfolds, we see the students grow and evolve as they take risks, explore their passions, and challenge the status quo. However, their newfound independence and creativity clash with the rigid expectations of the school and their families, leading to conflict and tragedy. Throughout the movie, Keating's teachings are embodied in his repeated exhortation to "Carpe Diem," or "seize the day." He encourages his students to make the most of their lives, to embrace their passions, and to pursue their dreams without fear. The film's themes of individualism, non-conformity, and the power of art and literature to inspire change and challenge authority have resonated with audiences for decades, making "Dead Poets Society" a beloved classic of American cinema. This 20-question movie guide will help your students stay focused during this powerful and inspirational movie. This guide comes with a copy of Walt Whitman's "O Captain! My Captain!" poem. Lastly students are given a task to write a poem. This movie guide comes with an answer key. Ready to print and ready to use! Enjoy!
