This book about Garrett Morgan, an African-American inventor, tells the story of Morgan and his important inventions: a belt fastener for sewing machines, a gas mask, a traffic signal, and a hair-straightening chemical among others. He is also known for developing a water intake tunnel to help save workers who were trapped fifty feet beneath Lake Erie. Morgan co-founded the Cleveland Association of Colored Men which later merged with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP is a civil rights organization formed in 1909 to advance justice for African Americans.
