To Kill a Mockingbird Characters – 1962 Movie Guide
ELA, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Charts, Teacher Tools
The story is told through the eyes of Finch's daughter, Scout (Mary Badham), who is about six years old when the events of the film take place. Scout, along with her brother Jem (Philip Alford) and their friend Dill (John Megna), become fascinated with the trial of Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man who is accused of raping a young white woman. As the trial unfolds, it becomes clear that Robinson is innocent and that the case is simply a product of racial prejudice and fear. Despite the evidence in Robinson's favor, the all-white jury finds him guilty, and he is sentenced to death. The trial, and the events leading up to it, cause a great deal of turmoil in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. Finch, who believes deeply in justice and equality, becomes the target of threats and abuse from some members of the community. However, he remains steadfast in his belief that everyone, regardless of race or social standing, deserves a fair trial and equal treatment under the law. In the end, Robinson is killed while attempting to escape from prison, and Finch's own children are attacked by the real perpetrator of the crime. The film ends with Scout realizing the importance of her father's principles and the power of empathy and understanding in a society that is often divided by fear and hatred. This product will help keep your students focused throughout the entire movie. The questions range from simple comprehension questions to short answers. All the questions are in chronological order and a teacher key is provided. I have also included a complete character reference guide to help your students make sense of the various characters. Respect & Inclusivity Strategies SEL Skills Writing Challenge
P.E. & Health, ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Grammar, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Teaching critical social emotional skills while getting kids to enjoy writing during the early elementary years is key. One way we can do that is to tie in their interests to the writing process. Showing respect and inclusivity can be challenging for children as their world expands, and they meet more people. By building strategies to practice these skills, we can support our students to increase their impact. One way we can do this is by role playing and creating stories. This resource (and the others that complement it in this series!) seeks to provide the scaffolding needed for learners to imagine and begin telling a story in written form. Then they're invited into 5 different STEAM extension activities to keep the conversations going. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing. STANDARDS: Meets CCSS Writing standards for grades 2-5. Remember, there are over a year's worth of writing activities in this line! Keep the fun stories rolling by checking out holiday, winter, summer, life skills, and adventure writing activities from Melissa Is Teaching! This printable is optimal for 2nd-5th graders as they take on the cognitively heavy task of writing a narrative, while also supporting them with the scaffolding and inspiration in the provided idea matrix. BONUS: Take advantage of the 4+ extension activity ideas included in this printable. These activities will take their writing beyond the page and bring it to life in STEAM-supported outlets. What you'll get: a 4 page PDF including instructions, extension activity ideas, and 3 student pages. One of these pages is simply writing space for you to print off as many copies as you need based on the amount your students are writing. You'll also find the editing checklist to prompt students to edit their own work for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
