What is translanguaging? And how can it help your students learn their letter sounds? Translanguaging is when a multilingual person’s full linguistic repertoire is used and honored, instead of trying to keep narrowly focused on a single language. Translanguaging is a pedagogical process where more than one language within a classroom lesson is utilized to build understanding. Translanguaging describes the way bilinguals use their linguistic resources to make sense of and interact with the world around them through language. Using translanguaging strategies in your classroom is an equitable way to support your emerging bilingual students. This resources validates the learning your native Spanish speakers and their families bring to the learning environment. Rather than the traditional charts/ charts -by-subject/ela-charts/pre-reading-charts/abc-chart">ABC chart where "A is for apple" this chart uses cognates for letters A-Z so students can use what they know about letters sounds in Spanish to build understanding of the letters sounds in English. An ideal tool to share with parents and students who are native Spanish speakers. Letter A Reading Strips

Practice reading simple sentences with these letter A reading strips. Students will read words that begin with the letter A using the picture clue on each strip. There are 14 total reading strips that focus on both long A words and short A words included. All sentences are in the form of "A is for ___." These letter A reading strips are suitable to preschool or kindergarten kids who are learning to identify the initial sound of the letter A. Students can sort between long and short vowel sounds, or simply read the strips to practice recognizing letter A words. These cards are perfect for introducing new vocabulary to students. What is Included: * Seven Long A Word Sentences - apple, ant, astronaut, ax, ambulance, avocado, alligator * Seven Short A Word Sentences - alien, apron, angry, afraid, angel, anchor, acorn When to Use: * Literacy Center * Reading Center * Small Group Activity * Task Box Activity (using pencil boxes) Ways to Use * Place on a ring for a simple reading ring for a reading center * Cut the picture from the strip and have students match the picture to the sentence * Simply have students read the strips to practice recognizing words that begin with the target letter Skills Assessed: * Reading Simple Sentences * Beginning Sounds * Distinguishing between the long and short sounds of the letter A * Using picture clues to figure out new words These reading strips are a low prep activity. Feral Children: A Study of Dani and Genie

Dani was a feral child found living in horrid conditions in the Tampa Bay area in 2008. Genie's story is much older than that and can be found in many textbooks. While their stories could be discussed in both a psychology class (child development) and a sociology class, the focus is from the sociological perspective. The resource Feral Children: A Study of Dani and Genie comes with links to three articles from a Florida newspaper that wrote about Dani when she was found in 2008, as well as a "ten-years later" follow up article. In addition, there is a link to the story of Genie, which is a YouTube video. Included for the students as handouts are: · a scaffolded essay prompt that can be used as discussion questions or for students working in pairs to prepare to write about Genie's story. This is editable, so you'll be able to customize it according to your own class and needs.. A generic rubric has also been included for grading purposes. · scaffolded questions separate from the essay, possibly for discussion, that goes along with the video. These questions bring up the topic of ethical concerns, such as "Was it ethical to study Genie?" "Did the case study harm her welfare?" There is also an opportunity to compare the sociological perspective to that of the psychological perspective. This too is editable. · a graphic organizer for planning the essay about Genie. This could be adapted to create one for each of these children. - finally, there is an opportunity to list the similarities and differences between the two girls and to use that knowledge to form conclusions. A final thought-provoking question asks about the further study of the topic.
