Regents Global 9 CRQ "Crusades and Black Death" + Video Lessons This product is a constructed-response question (“CRQ”) in the format of the new New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography. The CRQ calls upon the student to examine historical sources (I use exclusively primary sources) by providing historical or geographic context, identifying the point of view, intended audience, or purpose of a document and then using the two documents in either compare-contrast, cause-effect analysis, or turning point identification. I advocate a strategy of assigning one CRQ in each unit of study in grades nine and ten without access to notes. I used this as one of the tests at the end of a unit of study. I would tell students about what kinds of documents would appear and what historical context they should be able to recall in advance. It is a challenging task for them. The first challenge for novices is to understand what it means to provide context. Faced with the question “What is the historical context of this document?”, beginners will retell what the document says. With this resource Ornithology: Cedar Waxwing - Research Project, students will research the data requested and complete the chart provided while expanding their knowledge about the Cedar Waxwing. Students are asked to use science textbooks, encyclopedias, or the internet to find their information. Some of the required information to find include: Kingdom Phylum Scientific name: Coloration Beak color; Lifespan Clutch size Habitat Diet Wingspan Mass Conservation status: Length Additionally, students are asked to Describe the eggs of the Cedar Waxwing bird, describe their tail, and draw a picture of the two birds listed in the resource. Color them in. List their scientific name. (Draw their closest relative the Bohemian Waxwing). Students can present their findings in different ways: Oral presentation, posters, digital slides, brochures, etc. And they also can be required to turn in this resource! This resource Ornithology: Cedar Waxwing - Research Project was designed for middle school students, however it can also be used for high schoolers. Students may work independently, in pairs, or in groups. If students work in groups, make sure each student has their part of the research assigned so that everyone does their part in completing the research project.
