TR Beginning Blends Worksheets A beginning blends worksheet to help teach 'TR', such as trip, trap and trunk etc... Beginning blends are often tricky to learn, especially for children with a processing difficulty, such as dyslexia. By targeting the individual blends, children can be helped over this stage of phonic learning, so crucial for further success in reading and spelling. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the TR initial blend. What does the worksheet involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then complete words by adding the letters 'tr'. They then read the words they have made and write them under the pictures. They are then given six more words to make by writing 'tr' in the spaces. Once read, the child must look for the words in the grid. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although it is strongly suggested that an adult works with those children with special needs for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of beginning blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. I will use flashcards - a time-honoured, efficient method of teaching, to help them become familiar with the blends, asking them to both read and write the blends. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as possible, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Phonics Presentations: OR Lesson This is a simply taught, phonic lesson, to teach the sound 'or'. The video format can be easily shared. There is no distracting music, or any unnecessary pictures. Who is the Or video lesson for? It is suitable for all ages and abilities, including those with special needs. An adult should sit with the child for maximum benefit. It is better if an adult teaches the child him/herself, so this video can also be used to see how a phonic lesson can be taught, simply and cheaply at home. Parents can use it as a home-education resource. It can be used by parents to learn how to teach their child, breaking each skill up into tiny steps so needed by those with a special need. Lesson Format: The lesson begins with training the child's ear to hear the new sound /or/ in words. This leads on into spelling words with /or/: short, torch, storm, thorn and finally horse with the silent 'e'. Finally, the pupil is given three sentences to read containing words with the sounds /or/. Learn Initial Sounds F: Lesson 6 teaches the letter Ff and its related phonic sound through a 36-slide PowerPoint lesson and 5 follow-up activity worksheets. All you need to teach the phonic letter F! Whether in school or at home, this series of phonic presentations can help you teach initial/beginning sounds effectively to all pupils, including those with special needs/dyslexia. This lesson is part of a synthetic, systematic phonics programme for all abilities including those suspected of being dyslexic. This lesson is in the first stage of the Reading Made Simple programme where we teach the initial, or beginning, sounds. The ability to hear the initial/beginning sound is stressed throughout, while we learn to associate each letter with its sound. Each lesson can stand alone but the activities will presume knowledge of the previous letters in the alphabet as Reading Made Simple teaches the initial sounds in alphabetical order. Special features of the Learn Initial Sounds F: Lesson 6 The PowerPoint is silent so that you can interact with your child in the best way for them: full instructions are provided at the bottom of each slide - be sure to show 'Notes'. Science of Reading Aligned Truly phonetic; no 'i' for 'ice-cream'. We focus heavily on phonemic awareness which is so necessary for a head start in phonics The child is given plenty of opportunities to learn the necessary skills - perfection is not expected in lesson 1 but the teacher will be looking for the development of the necessary skills as the child works through the alphabet. It can be used in multiple ways: As the child learns each sound, you can use the PowerPoint lesson to reinforce your own lesson It can be sent home for a child to watch with his/her parents after being taught the letter Ff in class - this will then act as revision as well as training the parent as to what is necessary to help the child. Use in class Use at home by parents or for home education Suggested Method: Introduce each letter in turn to your pupil. Have a flashcard of the letter ready. Say each letter's sound to the child and ask him/her to repeat it thrice. Explain that some words begin with this sound. Give an example. Use the lesson as teacher training for yourself, to see how to teach your child, or use it with the child. Choose suitable activities (matching the ability of your child) from the pak of worksheets. Notes are suggestions only - use language appropriate to your pupil and be sure to interact naturally. However, do make sure that you focus on the hearing of the sounds at the beginning of words as this is much overlooked in the quest to help children learn the initial sounds as quickly as possible. Short A: Riddle Time Sample Game Note: This download is in PowerPoint show mode to protect the rights of the image creator(s), and is thus UNEDITABLE. Playing the Game The question slide will begin with a clue and the amount of points available for guessing the correct word with this clue alone. Students can write/say their answers. Clicking the curved arrow on the right will make the next clue appear. This will have a lower points value but gives another clue for students to guess the word on. Again, press the curved arrow for the final clue. This is pretty much a a give away ie. you put this on your head, so students win at least five points on each round. Press the arrow for the answer. A pic will also appear but immediately become semi-transparent so you can still see the clues underneath if you wish to go through them. Press the square in the bottom right corner to go to the next page. Will be harder for early learners due to the amount of reading so you may have to read it out and help with some meanings.
