TR Beginning Blends Worksheets A beginning blends worksheet to help teach 'TR', such as trip, trap and trunk etc... Beginning blends are often tricky to learn, especially for children with a processing difficulty, such as dyslexia. By targeting the individual blends, children can be helped over this stage of phonic learning, so crucial for further success in reading and spelling. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the TR initial blend. What does the worksheet involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then complete words by adding the letters 'tr'. They then read the words they have made and write them under the pictures. They are then given six more words to make by writing 'tr' in the spaces. Once read, the child must look for the words in the grid. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although it is strongly suggested that an adult works with those children with special needs for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of beginning blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. I will use flashcards - a time-honoured, efficient method of teaching, to help them become familiar with the blends, asking them to both read and write the blends. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as possible, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. This kites reading comprehension contains the following: Visualize on the Cover (Teacher Read Aloud Script) Start your lesson by taking a few moments to visualize the topic and share thoughts or feelings about it. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Extension Activities This page is optional for fast finishers or to take home. There are several activities, each one requiring a different skill. Do some, do none, do all, completely optional - but you will feel reassured knowing every possibility is planned for. Includes summary writting question. This SL fun, Find and Color worksheet for beginning blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the SL blend. This is a sample of our pack of 20 activities covering common initial blends which can be found here in one PDF file: less clutter on your computer! What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Who are the initial blends Find and colour worksheets for? Young learners Those with a special need Due to their non-babyish nature , they can be successfully used with older ESL/EFL pupils. Answer keys: The answer key is included on the sheet, in small print.

A colourful A4-size alphabet picture chart to help children learn to recognise the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. Each letter has a picture of an object that begins with that sound. 2 font styles are included. When children are first starting to learn letter shapes and sounds, it is helpful to have a handy reference chart that the children can use to aid recall or letter shapes and a picture cue to the sound each letter stands for. There are many ways to use these charts: Wall reference Desk reference - give one to each child; special needs children especially find them helpful.
