Reading Made Simple — Free EW Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Reading Made Simple for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. Tested by real children: One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' When I hear these reviews, I know that I have succeeded in my aim to write a phonics curriculum that can help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. There is no obligation and no right or wrong way to use them. To print: print double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Fold in half to create your A5 booklet. This o or oo? Phonic Game is a listening game to help the child to hear the ‘oo’ sound in words, as different to the ‘o’ sound as some children have difficulty hearing the new ‘oo’ sound. This is a simple oral game for 2 players to help to develop the ability to hear the sounds as separate in words without the need to worry about text yet. No die needed. These children may have auditory processing difficulties, of which there are growing numbers of children. With the recognition of the needs of these children and timely intervention, many can survive school. Sadly without it, they may soon fall behind. If you have a child who cannot hear the graphemes in words easily, then find or make a game to help. This is one such game you can use. Background to why I made this game One of my pupils has a speech delay. When I introduced him to ‘oo’, he tried to sound out the words saying ‘o’ instead of ‘oo’. It was as if ‘oo’ was a foreign sound to him. So, I devised this game to help him to hear the ‘oo’ sound in words he uses frequently in speech. After playing it a few times he is now happily sounding out to read and spell words with the ‘oo’ sound. This game uses only the ‘oo’ sound as heard in ‘moon’. Who can use the 'o' or 'oo' game? Anyone who is teaching a child who shows difficulty in learning to read words with /oo/, trying instead to say /o/. This is a pack of phonic word family lists for the most common digraphs and trigraphs, Those included are: ck, oo, ee, sh, ch, nd/nt ending, nk endings, th, ng, ing, ar, or, a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, ai, ea, oa, high, it, ay, ou, aw, oi, ur, al, er, y ending both ee and eye, ea saying/e/, ow as in cow, a saying /ar/, long vowels with no 'e', ow saying oe, ew, oy and rules concerning 'wa' words. Each list contains no more than 10/11 words. This is deliberate, as it helps those with any special need, and those without progress more securely. How to study the words on each list: Each list is studied for one week and the child can become very familiar with these words, so gaining reading and spelling fluency. The child should be encouraged to first learn to recognise and see the new sound in words, then to see it in text, and then to use it to spell and read words. Finally. the child should be encouraged to remember the words on each list, as this will help with learning which combination of letters is needed to spell each word (e.g. is it 'a-e or ai?) The word lists can be used by anyone, however, they have been written to form the basis of teaching the Reading Made Simple lessons. This Olympic Themed Editable Schedule Cards resource is a versatile one to use in your classroom, lunchroom or office. Each label has the Olympic circles all around the rectangle label. For every page, there are three labels included. There are three versions: blank, one with a script font “am” and “pm”, and one with a print font “am” and “pm”. Simply duplicate as many slides as you need, then type in your schedule, print them out and laminate them, add magnets or velcro, etc. Or just print them and laminate them so you can write on them with permanent or dry-erase marker. You can create your own Olympic themed schedule using these editable schedule cards. You can also print two or three pages to a sheet to make an individual schedule for students who struggle with staying on task or who spend time in other classrooms or receiving services. For a long lasting resource, I suggest you print, cut, and laminate the schedule cards. If you print on card stock, it will help them last even longer. Here is a simple book to help with the teaching of initial sounds for the very young. It was written for Reading Made Simple, my 100% FREE phonic programme teaching reading and writing, but can bu used with any good phonic programme. Aims and objectives To help children to learn: The sounds that each letter of the alphabet stands for To hear this sound at the beginning of words (initial sounds/beginning sound) To be able to form the letters of the alphabet correctly and link them to the sound each one stands for. What is included: 1 PDF with one page for each letter of the alphabet. Steps and order: Introduce the child to the sound and look for things that begin with each sound. You can use our video to help you to do this. Teach the child to write the letter. Then use the workbook to practice. Each page contains one object from the previous sound. Can th child remember how to write the sound for this picture? Can the child hear that the initial sound is different to that being studied? Assessment The adult should always assess while the child is working and ask: Is the child remembering the sound each letter makes? Can the child hear the correct initial sound?
