About this resource
What's inside this resource
This EW phonics workbook helps first and second graders read and spell words with ew. Page 1 compares the two common sounds, ew as in chew and ew as in few, and reminds children to say words the way they normally speak. They blend grew, blew, mew and new, then copy chew and few.
On page 2, children join onsets such as bl and gr to ew to write four whole words, then choose from a word box to finish four sentences. Page 3 has a short story, A New Flag, with a word note for crew and four questions about the story, including writing the next sentence with an ew word. Page 4 is an on-your-own check with three new words to read, three dictated words to spell and a sentence that uses the word new. A teacher guide explains accent differences and lays out four short sessions, and the answer key covers all 26 numbered items.
- Grades 1–2: the ew spelling for the oo and yoo sounds
- Six pages: four student pages, a teacher guide and an answer key
- Print options: a full-color PDF and a print-friendly black and white PDF
