This unit focuses only on the Long I sounds. Learning how to read can be the most challenging activity for students and for a teacher. Understanding that the combination of letters can make the same vowel sound requires lots of repetitive practice of reading and writing these words with these sounds. There are other phonics units that I sell that focuses on the Long A sound with a combination of different letters, the Long E sound with a combination of different letters, the Long O sound with a combination of different letters , and the Long U sound with a combination of different letters . Reading can be made easier with these phonic helps that repeatedly encourage students to practice these Long I sounds. Activities include reading comprehension and identifying the Long I in their reading, writing their answers to questions regarding the paragraph, identifying additional Long I words in sentences using a word bank, matching words with pictures, spinning a paperclip activity where students will write the word with the Long I sound, and lastly a fun wordsearch with variations of Long I words. These activities are for each long vowel words that are focused on the Long I sounds so there are plenty of opportunities for students to practice their comprehension reading skills and phonic sounds. Students will practice the following Long I Word sounds: I_E, IE, IGH, and Y Teachers can use this resource in whole group, individually with students, students can practice with each other in centers, or these worksheets can be assigned as homework. Worksheets are also differentiated for each Long I sounds for all young learners which makes it perfect for all 1st - 2nd graders. A total of 28 pages full of reading and phonic activities. Along with reading and writing, there are matching, cutting, and pasting activities. Guided Reading is a research-based instruction process whereby the teacher works with small grouping of students being equal in a particular reading achievement level. The teacher provides for each reader's development of effective reading competencies. However different than in the earlier days of reading groups, small and temporary groups are flexible and dynamic. The observance and evaluation of the progress of readers are done by teachers on a systematic basis. Thus, grouping and regrouping students is based on the strengths of students and the intense changing needs throughout their reading development. In the 1960s in New Zealand, Guided Reading was developed. It was enhanced over the years after it arrived in the United States thanks to educators like Gay Su Pinnell and Lesley Fountas. In 1996, Fountas & Pinnell published their enormously influential book, Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children (Heinemann). This book changed how reading was taught, and it is still taught today to over a million teachers worldwide. The aim of Guided Reading lessons is to develop effective readers. A set of 13 books is bundled together with all 13 worksheets of the Guided Reading series for grades KG-12. There are lesson plans and different activities for every grade, with the answers in the end section of the worksheet.

This Unit focuses on the Long U Sounds! Learning how to read can be the most challenging activity for students and for a teacher. Understanding that the combination of letters can make the same vowel sound requires lots of repetitive practice of reading and writing these words with these sounds. There are other phonics units that I sell that focuses on the Long A sound with a combination of different letters, the Long E sound with a combination of different letters, the Long I sound with a combination of different letters, and the Long O sound with a combination of different letters. Reading can be made easier with these phonic helps that repeatedly encourage students to practice these Long U sounds. Activities include reading comprehension and identifying the Long U in their reading, writing their answers to questions regarding the paragraph, identifying additional Long U words in sentences using a word bank, matching words with pictures, spinning a paperclip activity where students will write the word with the Long U sound, and lastly a fun wordsearch with variations of Long U words. These activities are for each long vowel words that are focused on the Long U sounds so there are plenty of opportunities for students to practice their comprehension reading skills and phonic sounds. Students will practice the following Long U Word sounds: U_E, EW, OO, UE, UI and OU. Teachers can use this resource in whole group, individually with students, students can practice with each other in centers, or these worksheets can be assigned as homework. Worksheets are also differentiated for each Long U sounds for all young learners which makes it perfect for all 1st - 2nd graders. A total of 38 pages full of reading and phonic activities. Along with reading and writing there are matching, cutting, and pasting activities. It includes clear teacher instructions for a fun class simulation where half of your students will act out a new "class norm" (five options are provided such as not raising your hand to ask a question) that the other half of your class won't be expecting. While the simulation is happening, everyone will be working on a three page reading comprehension task . Students will read about cultural norms from around the world (slurping noodles when eating in Japan or nodding one's head to say "no" in Bulgaria). They will imagine how not knowing about the cultural norms in a place where they are travelling could lead to accidental misunderstandings. Students are also taught a simple definition of the concept of stereotypes, and they will think of how they are different from cultural norms. Finally, there is a 1-page reflection with prompts- perfect for after a class discussion. Teacher Instructions: 1. Split your class in two and talk to only one half. 2. Tell them that they will have a new “class cultural norm.” Pick one from the provided ideas. 3. When the whole class is reunited, pass out the reading page & worksheets. Students read about cultural norms and answer the questions. 4. As they work, the selected half will enact their new norm, which will confuse the other half of the class. 5. Once the point has been made, let the other half in on the secret. 6. Have a discussion about cultural norms and give students time to write a reflection about this lesson.
