6th Grade Adding & Subtracting Decimals – Guided Notes & Practice

6th Grade Adding & Subtracting Decimals – Guided Notes & Practice
Math, Decimals, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets, Worksheets & Printables, Teacher Tools, Presentations

When the lesson focuses solely on adding and subtracting decimals, students are set up for major success right off the bat, not just in terms of performing the operations, but in their confidence with decimals. This guided lesson is super print and teach, so you can run a highly effective lesson on decimal operations without putting a ton of extra time into planning. The guided notes include explanations and worked examples that demonstrate explicitly how to line up decimals, carefully use place value, and regroup when necessary. The format is easy for students to follow during the lesson or to reference independently. Following the notes comes guided practice with ten strategically selected problems to inspire confidence in students as they try applying what they've just learned. Then, there is independent practice with twenty problems to help students solidify their understanding of adding and subtracting decimals. The practice problems even include word problems involving money and measurement with decimals. One major benefit of using this resource is how it addresses where students usually make mistakes by offering "pro tips" throughout the lessons. For example, it includes reminders to line up the decimals and notice how to regroup properly so that students don't just practice, but they see how to avoid common mistakes before they practice. A full answer key is included, making for quick grading or easy student checking if you choose to use it that way. Specific skills covered in this lesson on decimal addition and subtraction are: adding and subtracting decimals with like and unlike place values, subtracting decimals that require regrouping, lining up decimals using place value, and word problems involving decimals. This lesson can be used cover all of Common Core standard 6.NS.B.3. Teachers find it extremely useful for whole group instruction, intervention, homework, or review, and it fits perfectly into interactive notebooks! If you want to cover decimal addition and subtraction thoroughly, you and your students won't be disappointed in the process with this guided notes lesson!

Math, Number Lines, Decimals, Place Value, Grade 5, 6, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

The number line is ideal for introducing rounding decimal numbers to a specific place value. Here we focus on numbers containing tenths, hundredths and thousandths and then round each of these to the nearest whole number, or numbers to 1d.p or 2 d.p. Worksheet Sets Worksheet Set 1: The focus here is on rounding numbers written to 1 d.p. to the nearest whole number. Students are encouraged firstly to find the number on the number lines provided before doing the actual rounding. Worksheet Set 2: Numbers written to 2 d.p. need to be rounded to either the nearest whole number or to 1d.p. Worksheet Set 3: Numbers written to 3 d.p. need to be rounded to either the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth. In this worksheet the language of the questions is much more varied. How many worksheets are in each set ? Lots and lots. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time. This will allow you to create as many new worksheets you will need for practice throughout the year (classwork, homework, revision, fillers etc) or even give small groups of students in your class different sets of questions . There will certainly be enough to ensure fluency in this topic. There is also a set of ready made worksheets at the 3 levels shown above. Here’s a ready-to-go, visual assessment of your students’ understanding of decimal and fraction benchmarks! They simply cut and paste to show their comprehension of this topic. This is a great way for students with different ability levels (and English comprehension levels) to show their math knowledge: without being hampered by reading comprehension or written output challenges. This one-page assessment includes a number line from 0 to 1. Students first cut out 14 decimal and fraction pairs (common benchmarks like 1/2 and 0.333) and determine where they should be pasted on the number line. This ensures they know the decimal value of each fraction given and how to order them by size. For an extra challenge, 4 more fractions and decimals are given (such as 11/12- that are not familiar benchmarks). Students must estimate where they would be placed on the number line and glue them there. How to Use this Product: This product is designed to be a simple and quick assessment of fraction and decimal conversion, estimating, using a number line, and common fraction and decimal benchmarks. Of course, you could also use it as an activity in your unit, a homework worksheet, or a math centre. Grades to Use With: This product is well-suited for students in grades 4-6. Multiplying Decimals - Where to put the Decimal Point

Multiplying Decimals - Where to put the Decimal Point
Math, Decimals, Multiplication and Division, Division, Grade 6, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

When multiplying 2 decimal numbers together, the usual procedure is to perform the multiplication and then, as the second and final step, decide where to put the decimal point. Placing the decimal point involves adding the number of decimal places of the original numbers, and this will tell you where to put the decimal point in answer. Here pupils will get lots of practice with placing the decimal point and will be excellent preparation for "Multiply Decimals using the Standard Algorithm" There are five sets of differentiated worksheets with questions presented horizontally AND in the standard format for multiplying decimals. In the initial four sets, the problems are set out so that pupils can see a progression from the multiplier being a unit , then a tenth, and finally a hundredth. The reason for this is that whilst learning the method of placing the decimal point students will get the opportunity to see any patterns that might show up in the answers. In the 5th set, the questions are presented in a random order A standout feature is the worksheet randomization. With a single click, educators can generate an entirely new set of questions, making it a renewable resource for the entire school year. Be it for classwork, revision, or homework, adaptability ensures students achieve proficiency in the topic. You could also use any of the worksheets to explain or introduce the subject to your class as you will have almost unlimited examples to work with and they will be different from the actual worksheets you hand out to your students. As these worksheets need little explanation and no preparation, they are ideal if you need to leave work for a substitute teacher. Answers found on the second page of every worksheet are automatically generated when you create a new worksheet . Lastly, it's essential to note that these resources are compatible PDF documents. They operate seamlessly with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on both Windows and Mac. Plus, the randomizing features are effortlessly accessible via touchscreen devices or interactive whiteboards. Convert between Expanded, Standard and Word Format of Decimals

Convert between Expanded, Standard and Word Format of Decimals
Common Core, Math, Decimals, Grade 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Understanding the base-ten number system and the concept of place value is strengthened by practicing conversions between different number formats, such as standard, expanded, and word forms. This process highlights the importance of each digit's position within a decimal number. The expanded form of decimals shows the sum of the values of each digit in the number. Writing decimals in an expanded form means writing each number according to its place value. Using fractions in the expanded form of decimals shows the value each digit represents and connects decimals and fractions. By breaking down the numbers in this way, it helps students to visualize and understand how digits combine to form larger numbers. To support this learning, this structured series of sets of worksheets consists of carefully sequenced practice materials that teachers can select based on student readiness. Each component builds upon previous knowledge: Foundation Skills: - Begin with expressing decimals in expanded fractional form as standard numbers - Progress to converting expanded decimal form into standard notation - Practice both skills with integrated exercises Intermediate Concepts: - Work backward from standard numbers to expanded fractional form - Transform standard notation into expanded decimal representations - Apply these skills with practical, real-world examples Advanced Applications: - Work with more complex multipliers to prepare for word problems - Read and write numbers expressed in words (available in two difficulty levels) Two regional variations exist for expressing numbers in words: 1. American style: "one hundred fifty-two" 2. British/Australian style: "one hundred and fifty-two" How many Worksheets in each Set ? Almost unlimited. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time. This will allow you to create as many new worksheets you will need for practice throughout the year (classwork, homework, revision, fillers etc) or even give small groups of students in your class different sets of questions either at the same level or differentiated. There will certainly be enough to ensure fluency in this topic. As these worksheets need little explanation, they are ideal if you need to leave work for a replacement teacher. Answers can be found on the second page of every worksheet, automatically generated when you create a new worksheet. Note These resources are PDF documents and work with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computers with the randomising buttons also working via a touchscreen (PC or Mac) or on an Interactive Whiteboard.
