Ice Cream Graph Activity

Ice Cream Graph Activity
Math, Graphing, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities

If you are looking for exciting and impactful ways to have students practice with organizing data and graphing, look no more! This is an Ice Cream Graph Activity for your students to take part in. It may be used best with 2nd – 5th grade math students. In this data and graphing activity, students will collect data on their favorite ice cream flavors before organizing it into a graph. Here’s what the lesson might look like as an introduction to, or review of, graphing… o Explain to the students that they will be choosing the flavor of ice cream they like the best out of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate chip. o Give each student an ice cream cone and allow time for them to color it according to the flavor they’ve chosen. It must look like that flavor, or it won’t count as useful data! o As students finish coloring their ice cream cones, have them tape their cones randomly to the board. o When all ice cream cones have been taped to the board, ask the class some questions. The point is to show students that it’s very difficult to read this data because it isn’t organized. This is where graphing comes in very handy! o You may either do this yourself or ask for student helpers but sort out the cones according to flavors on the board. Explain that the students will be making a pictograph on their own paper while you make one either on the floor or on a board all students can see. o Together, create a graph for these ice cream flavors. Students will need to decide on a title and a key. o When the graph is complete, discuss the kinds of answers someone can determine from this graph (e.g., 4 students like vanilla the best, more students like chocolate than chocolate chip, etc.) As a class, make a list of possible questions you could ask others to answer based on the data shown on your graph. Differentiated Book Report: 4 Different Levels for All of your Learners in Grades 1-5

Differentiated Book Report: 4 Different Levels for All of your Learners in Grades 1-5
ELA, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Literature, Writing, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities

This book report package includes four book reports with different levels of complexity. They can be used after reading a class novel, or for when students finish reading their own personal books. How to Use: You can start with one level early in the school year and progress to a more challenging version in another term as your students' writing abilities develop. Or, you can differentiate for your students’ current ability levels. Some students might need a simpler version while others are ready for a challenge. Topics covered include: plot summary, setting, characters, genre, making connections, providing a review, and making recommendations All versions also include space for students to draw a scene or the cover of the book. I love to display a class set of these on a bulletin board outside the room or in the library so students in other divisions can see the recommendations of what my students are reading! Grades to Use With: Since there are four levels, these book reports can easily work for students in grades 1-5. They can help address the following standards across several grades; CCSSRL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events. CCSSRL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. CCSSRF.3.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. CCSSRF.4.4a Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding. If you are looking for a reading response for slightly older students, check out my Reading Response Graphic Organizer to help your students choose meaningful quotes from literature. It works well for middle grades students in grades 5-8!

Mixtures - Solutions, Suspensions, Dissolving and Saturated Solutions - Dominoes Game for Middle School
Science, Chemistry, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities, Games

A dominoes game for middle school with questions and statements on mixtures including solutions, suspensions, solubility and saturated solutions. Prior Knowledge > Elements and compounds are pure substance and mixtures are not. > Meaning of the terms solute, solvent, solution, soluble and insoluble. > Particle theory to explain why stirring, temperature and particle size affect the rate of dissolving. > Particle theory to explain dissolving, suspensions and saturated solutions. > Extracting information from solubility curves What You Get > 80 dominos > Animated PowerPoint explaining the rules and how to play. Rules of the Game > Each player selects seven dominos from the top of the face-down pile and holds them in their hand like playing cards. > The player whose surname begins with a letter closest to the letter A starts and play proceed in a clockwise direction. > Dominos can be matched exactly, or a name can be matched with a symbol or descriptions, sketches and circuit diagrams can be matched. > If a player thinks a match is wrong, they can challenge. If the challenger is correct, they give a card from their own hand to the challenged player. If the challenged player is correct, they give a card from their hand to the challenger. Pupils are encouraged to check their books for the correct answer and consult their teacher if a consensus is not reached. > If a player cannot play a domino, they pick up from the face down pile and can play if possible or add it to their hand. Pre-Algebra: Expression Input/Output Game

Pre-Algebra: Expression Input/Output Game
Math, Algebra, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Activities, Games

Here's an easy, no-prep partner game for your unit on expressions, graphing, variables, tables, and patterns! Simply project the expressions on the interactive whiteboard and students become an input/output machine (speaking in a robotic voice is, of course, optional). They secretly choose an expression and calculate outputs for their partner's inputs. This is great mental math practice too! There are two levels of difficulty to help all of your students participate. Level one expressions are one step (adding, subtracting, OR multiplying). Level two expressions are two step (multiplying AND adding or multiplying AND subtracting). Teacher Instructions: o Project these tables on the interactive whiteboard. o Students work in pairs. o One member starts as the “expression machine.” They secretly choose an expression from either table. o Their partner tells them an input number. They put it into the expression and say what the output would be. o Play until the partner can guess what expression they chose. Then switch roles. Grades to use with: This game could work well in classrooms with students in grades 5-8. It could be an introduction to algebra in the younger grades or a warm-up game for older students. It could also be used in high school special education classrooms to introduce algebra concepts in a much more approachable way. Standards: CCSS6.EE.A.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
