Back to School: 8 Stations for First Days for Secondary

Back to School: 8 Stations for First Days for Secondary
, Grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

As we usher in another Back to School season, it's time to build relationships, lay down the ground rules, establish a daily routine, and foster a positive classroom environment! Utilizing STATIONS, you can accomplish all these effectively in roughly two class periods. This adaptable 8-Station resource empowers you to modify, augment, or exclude any content that doesn't align with your class needs! It is recommended to allocate about 10 minutes for students to wrap up each station. The stations can be tackled in any order. Any station that doesn't apply to your class can be removed without impacting the overall activity. Detailed instructions for EACH station are provided! Included Stations (Designed for students in grades 7-12): 1- Introduction: An ice-breaker that encourages students to find ten shared interests within a set of guidelines, fostering classroom camaraderie. 2- Team Building: A fun and challenging task where groups of 3-4 are tasked with constructing the tallest tower within a given timeframe while adhering to set rules! 3- Cell phone Policy: In this activity, students watch a short video about the consequences of inappropriate cell phone use, especially social media, in the classroom. This will relate to your own cell phone policy. A customizable Cell Phone Policy handout is included. 4- Google Classroom/Class Syllabus: This activity allows students to explore your Google Classroom and class syllabus. A Class Syllabus template, editable to your needs, is included. If Google Classroom isn't applicable, simply remove this section! 5- Class Procedures: Students get to know your class procedures, rules, and expectations by viewing a slide presentation. An editable Google Slides template is included for you to personalize. 6- Study the Teacher: This activity allows students to learn about the teacher by scrutinizing six of your preferred things (or photographs). 7-Illustrated Name: This task lets students create a personalized illustrated nameplate, reflecting their interests, which can be used to adorn their class folder, desk, or class bulletin board . 8- Why Study History: This optional activity requires students to examine three quotes about the significance of studying history (or your respective subject) and share their views (in a Graffiti style on large butcher paper). If you don't teach history, simply delete or adjust the quotes. ***At each station, students respond to a concise question or set of questions in their group and engage in INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION. All handouts, station table tents, and station instructions are provided. For the stations, you'll need to provide: paper, large butcher paper or poster, tape, scissors, color tools, markers, computer access (for two stations). Teachers also need to bring six of their favorite items from home (photos are acceptable) for students to observe.

Real-Life Integers: Working with Integers & Number Lines Grade 6 Math

Real-Life Integers: Working with Integers & Number Lines Grade 6 Math
Math, Number Lines, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Subtraction, Numbers, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Worksheets

Integers are everywhere in our lives! Get your students excited about learning about integers including using number lines and finding the difference between integers in a variety of real-life situations. This is perfect for students in grade six who are first learning about rational numbers. Social Media: Up Votes and Down Votes: You will read each statement one at a time to your class. Then ask for upvotes (and count the hands) and ask for downvotes (and count the hands). Remind students they can abstain from voting on a statement if they are ambivalent. If you think it will help your class, have students vote anonymously by putting their heads down. Record the upvotes and downvotes for each of the 10 statements. Students complete the math (which is really adding integers) to get each statement’s final score. (Extension: This activity can lead to a mini-lesson on facts vs. opinions.) Cities: Temperatures and Elevations: Students will need internet access for this activity. They will explore two cities: one with a positive temperature in degrees Celsius and one with a negative temperature in degrees Celsius. Using a number line, they will compare these two temperatures. Then, they must find the elevation (in meters) of six cities around the world to complete three math questions. Sports: Golf and Football: Students will apply adding and subtracting integers to a golf game to calculate the player’s score above or below par. Then, they use integers to calculate if a football team scores a touchdown. (Extension: Students can create their own football scenario. They can choose a starting point, make up 5 plays, and trade with a friend. ) Financial Literacy: Bank Account: Students add and subtract integers to keep a running bank balance in an account with an overdraft. They see how purchases reduce your balance and deposits increase your balance. I have included two versions, one with decimals and one with whole numbers only.

Math: Easter Math Activities Enhance your student's learning with fun, engaging, and amazing Easter-themed activity . This resource is specifically for middle school students and designed to lend them a hand in developing crucial math concepts such as problem-solving, adding decimals, subtracting decimals, among many others. The main idea behind the activity is to capture the notorious Easter bunny via ingenious problem-solving. Students are expected to solve 8 unique tasks each posing a clue about the hiding place of our fluffy friend. Through their correctly acquired clues from each resolved task, they're required to forecast where they think the bunny might have fled to. This incredibly versatile set can work wonderfully in multiple instructional settings – you could use it as part of daily review leading up towards Spring Break or even mold it into interactive stations across the classroom for an intensive day of experimenting with math. You could also assign this toolkit for homework tasks or use it during morning hours or bell work that fits best according to your style of working. The activities included cover vast key middle school-level math areas namely decimal operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing), multiplying whole numbers by whole numbers and understanding elapsed time; converting between units (inches to feet; ounces to pounds). Culture Lesson: Cultural Norms and Avoiding Stereotypes Worksheets

Culture Lesson: Cultural Norms and Avoiding Stereotypes Worksheets
Social Studies, Psychology, Life Studies, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Activities, Experiments, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools

Do you want your students in grades 5-7 to learn how to become global citizens who can respect a variety of cultural norms and comprehend cross-cultural differences? Are you looking for a fun way to bring all of these ideas to life? Check out this ready-to-go lesson for your class. This 5-Page PDF is ready to print for your social studies classroom. It includes clear teacher instructions for a fun class simulation where half of your students will act out a new "class norm" (five options are provided such as not raising your hand to ask a question) that the other half of your class won't be expecting. While the simulation is happening, everyone will be working on a three page reading comprehension task. Students will read about cultural norms from around the world (slurping noodles when eating in Japan or nodding one's head to say "no" in Bulgaria). They will imagine how not knowing about the cultural norms in a place where they are travelling could lead to accidental misunderstandings. Students are also taught a simple definition of the concept of stereotypes, and they will think of how they are different from cultural norms. Finally, there is a 1-page reflection with prompts- perfect for after a class discussion. Teacher Instructions: 1. Split your class in two and talk to only one half. 2. Tell them that they will have a new “class cultural norm.” Pick one from the provided ideas. 3. When the whole class is reunited, pass out the reading page & worksheets. Students read about cultural norms and answer the questions. 4. As they work, the selected half will enact their new norm, which will confuse the other half of the class. 5. Once the point has been made, let the other half in on the secret. 6. Have a discussion about cultural norms and give students time to write a reflection about this lesson.
