They’ll try building a small model bomb shelter, design a propaganda poster, explore secret codes, work through math challenges based on evacuation trains, and investigate rationing and nutrition during the war. Each project includes teacher notes, student handouts, and most come with a short background presentation to help introduce the topic. Both printable and digital versions are included, so it works well in any classroom setting. These activities have been a great way to extend learning and keep students engaged beyond the book.

How to Use: •Print pages 2-13 for each student. •Page 2 has clear instructions for the entire project, places to write due dates, and a checklist to keep students on track. •Page 3 has seven different prompts for students to research. Each student needs to pick at least four prompts to include in their unique project. •Pages 4-6 are graphic organizers for your students to use as they take notes and record their research sources (page 6 is optional). •Pages 7-9 are templates for students to use to write at least four paragraphs about their country (page 9 is optional). They could also type and print these paragraphs instead. •Page 10 is for students to record and illustrate fast facts about their country including the flag, leader, and popular food. •Page 11 is for students to draw and label five famous attractions (natural or human-made) that are found in their country. •Page 12 is a title page for the project. •Page 13 is a rubric you can use to assess the project. Let students see it at the beginning of the project so they know what the expectations are. Over several weeks, your students can complete their research, write and proofread their paragraphs, and draw the visual components of their project. They can present their projects to each other so they can learn about many countries around the world. You could even have a Countries of the World Fair! Finally, you can use the rubric to assess each project. This lesson teaches students an organized and thorough approach to writing 5 sentence paragraphs. It is designed for middle school students in grades 5-8 or high school special education students. It introduces the terms: Point (stated in the topic sentence & the concluding sentence): says what the paragraph is about by making a claim or sharing an opinion Evidence: a fact, statistic, example, or quotation from a text that supports your point Explanation: your explanation and analysis of why the evidence supports your point Then it teaches students how to use these kinds of sentences to create a cohesive paragraph. Colour-coding is used to make the information more visual, but the pages can also be printed in black and white. What's Included: 10 Page PDF ready to print and go! Title Page/Teacher Instructions Student Handout with all of the necessary terminology: Students can refer back to this again and again! Seven engaging activities are included: Two cut-and-paste sample paragraph activities: These activities have 5 sentences which are mixed up. Students cut them out and paste them in the correct order to create logical paragraphs. One is about Little Red Riding Hood and one is about Mi'kmaq culture. Three paragraphs that have errors that need fixing: These paragraphs don't have five sentences in the correct order, or the correct types of sentences. Students may have to cross out a sentence and/or add a sentence. There is room to re-write the entire paragraph correctly.
