Students will also need to find the smallest base to complete the problems. There are 2 puzzles made from a 4 by 4 grid. The answer keys are inlcuded and made so that the teacher can check students work quickly. The teacher directions for the activity are: : 1. Give each student a copy of a puzzle. Have them cut it out, write a number that you give them on the back of each piece, mix them up, and place the pieces in a zip lock bag. (Give each student a different number to put on the back of the puzzle pieces. The numbers on the back are for when a piece is found on the floor. You will know to which bag it belongs.) 2. Have students to switch bags. This ensures that they mix them up. 3. Students will them put them back together. Use your key to check. 4. This is an activity that can be repeated on multiple days for review.

LESSON GOAL Students understand the role that cathedrals played in the religious life of people during the Middle Ages. Sections in the reading texts include information on pilgrimages, the architecture of cathedrals, religious art, and relics. TEXT EXAMPLE "During the Middle Ages, local churches played a very important role not only in people’s religious, but also their daily lives. In most places people were actually required to go to church on Sundays by law. Those who refused could be fined or even imprisoned. Churches also provided baptism for newborn babies, marriages, and funerals. Merchants and traders often held markets around churches, paying a fee to do so. Christians during the Middle Ages were also encouraged to go on pilgrimages – religious journeys – to famous holy places. Many people travelled as far as the Holy Land to visit Jerusalem – the place where they believed Jesus had been crucified and then had risen from the dead. Other popular pilgrimage destinations included Rome – where many early Christian leaders had lived and died – and the Spanish city of Compostela."
