Sight Word Cookie Jar
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Spelling, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, Activities
This interactive literacy resource leverages a beloved dessert theme to creatively strengthen sight word recognition using hands-on matching games and customizable storage centered around a vibrant printable cookie jar. The materials transform solitary flashcard drills into engaging opportunities to showcase growing fluency. Over 200 Dolch sight words are featured, strategically organized by difficulty level for optimal sequencing. To utilize, educators print jar and cookie templates then guide students matching terms to corresponding sweet treat illustrations. This scaffolds mastery through multimodal appeal, allowing young learners to trace vocabulary visually and physically before verbally reading items aloud. The durable, foldable jar functions as personalized storage allowing progress visibility over time as the container fills. Teachers might permit students to “buy” letter cookies after demonstrating automaticity reading target words. This incentivizes effort while transforming instruction into festive “cookie baking” for added engagement. Extensions allow advanced groups to sort cookies by syllables or manipulate terms into alphabetical order to link literacy with phonics or organization. Rather than rote flashcard drills, this vocabulary matching system spurs participation through playful analogies and vibrant visual cues designed to resonate with children. Phenomena like selective attention, encoding variability, context dependence and multi-sensory immersion catalyze efficient mastery. Students gain confidence recognizing essential lexical building blocks through repetitive exchanges in compelling format. This teacher-friendly resource has flexibility for collaborative group games at literacy centers or independent matching tasks at student desks. Young learners across ability levels will relish polishing sight word fluency while developing mastery at their own pace by “feasting” on engaging cookie templates pairing oral, visual and kinetic memory strategies. Unions Simulation
Social Studies, Government, History, History: USA, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Projects
Unions Simulation Teacher Guide Hello and thank you so much for purchasing my Unions Simulation! My students have really enjoyed this, and I have enjoyed seeing the concepts and familiar battle lines come to life. I hope your students enjoy it too! The lesson is designed to have a warm up, a goal statement, an agenda slide, a (very) brief overview of work conditions and famous strikes, then the instructions to the simulation, and then finally a quick exit ticket to cement major ideas. In general for the simulation, students are divided into one of three groups: bosses, strike-breakers, and union leadership. Each with their own desired outcome or goal. Begin by walking students through the warm-up, goal statement, agenda, and mini-lecture to refresh their minds on the era in question. To start the game , prompt the “Bosses” group to announce how much they plan to cut wages by. If needed, try to encourage the bosses to announce a pay cut in the range of $10-12/hour. This is a number that is acceptable to the replacement workers, but unacceptable to union leadership–starting conflict Next round, prompt replacement labor to negotiate with the bosses. Prompt the Union group to decide whether the pay cut is “acceptable” and if not, what actions could be taken. From there, let the simulation play out until it reaches an organic conclusion. My classes have ended a few different ways– the union getting arrested for threats of bombs, the unions accepting a pay cut to $13/hour, replacement labor being hired at $11/hour after several set-backs, etc. The key is students realizing the tenuous relationship between unions and their bosses, and union members and replacement labor. At the conclusion of the activity get students back in their designated seat, discuss the activity, and administer the exit ticket. Slope/Rate of Change FOLLOW THE PATTERN
Math, Algebra, Grade 8, Activities
This resource was developed to support the requirements of the 8th Grade Functions Standards below, specifically RATE OF CHANGE. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.F.B.4 Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of changeand initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values. This practice is meant to be basic and will hopefully help your students bridge the gap between learning about slope and then switching to graphing slope & y-intercept all in one. This should allow your students to focus just on slope before adding in the skill of identifying and plotting the y-intercept as well. If this is the first time your students have followed a slope pattern on a graph, I recommend this as a direct instruction activity , at least until they get the hang of it!
