Dice Word Drill Place a regular dice in your egg carton with your overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box and open it. Wherever the dice lands, the student must say the corresponding word however many times the dice says. For example, if the student shakes the box and the dice lands on five under the word “cake,” the student must say the word “cake” five times. •Student can use the Monitoring Card to check off the words they have already said and to rate their productions. •To use Sentence Strips with this activity , play as directed above except instead of saying the word only, they must say it in a sentence. 2. Word Match-Up Cut up the little “match-up” word squares and place one in your egg carton with the corresponding overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box and open it. The student is trying to make the little picture land in the space that matches with the same picture in the top overlay. If the little picture lands under a word that doesn’t match, the student must say that word and try again until they match. "Child Labor Trial" Skit

This is a useful and dramatic enhancement to help begin any lesson about child labor. In my classroom, I have used this to introduce some of the negative outcomes of the Industrial Revolution. Before the class begins I choose a student to represent Elizabeth Bentley. I prep that student and off we go. Once the students are settled, we begin the skit. It is for two people (the student and me). However, it is powerful and based on an actual trial from history. If you are looking to enhance your lesson on the evils of child labor, this will help. After the skit is finished I allow some time to debrief. I let the students ask questions. Here are some of the questions they ask or I ask them from this skit: -What is a flax mill? -What do you mean "hunchback"? -Can you explain again what a "doffer" is? -What was the typical day like for Elizabeth? -What is a "poor house"? -What do you think her future will be like? -How old is she again? When did she begin working? What do you think about this? -Compare Elizabeth's life with yours, what's the difference? -Do you think Elizabeth has hope? Explain... You can take however long you like with this. Usually for me it is about 20 minutes, so it is a great way to begin looking at the topic of child labor in general. You may go any direction in your lesson after this. For me, I use this when we begin looking at the "costs" of the Industrial Revolution.

This lesson, Which Essential Questions About History are Most Important to You? is set up as an Anticipation Guide and is designed to prompt students to think about what they will be learning in an American history or social studies class, civics class, or government class. The questions allow students to connect to and think deeply about values, concepts, and issues. This is an excellent way to frontload concepts and ideas, especially for ELL and RSP students. This lesson can be used in 7th-12th grade classrooms. It is also designed to get students to talk with an adult and with each other. Anticipation Guides are generally used to help students develop a purpose for their reading, activate schema, or prior knowledge, and develop an interest in the topic. This anticipation guide can be used as an icebreaker at the beginning of the year or can be used at any point. The detailed lesson plan includes objectives and learning targets that are aligned with the Common Core Standards, specifically focusing on speaking and listening. In addition, it includes the anticipation guide, directions for how students will administer the anticipation guide with an adult family member or family friend, or neighbor, a reflection for students, as well as directions for how to share what they think with their classmates. Objectives Students will identify which essential questions about history, government, society, rights, responsibilities, etc. are important to them and reflect on why. They will then ask an adult in their family to identify which questions are important to them and why. Students will practice talking with their peers about their essential questions as an icebreaker to get to know their classmates.
