CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E

Here is a simple game to help children learn to read CVC words with the medial sounds I and E. This game will help your child to learn to blend three-letter words with the short vowels ‘i’ and 'e'. That means, to put sounds together to make a word. The child has to be able to feel and hear the word that is being sounded out. This game is supplied in both colour and black and white - you choose how you print! We suggest laminating the pieces for durability. Who is the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E for? Those who are just beginning to sound out/blend CVC words with the I and E short vowel sounds. These may be: Young learners Special needs learners ESL/EFL learners of any age. Who can use the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E? Parents Homeschoolers/home educators Teachers in class, or for use in centers Those involved in intervention work Private tutors How can the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E be used? It can be played as a game for 2 players It can be used as a matching activity for individual pupils - great for centers! It can be used for assessment purposes The game pages can even be used as worksheets - you choose! To make the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E Simply print out the two baseboards. Print out the word cards and cut them up. Teach your pupil to take care of the cards and not bend them more than can be helped. To play the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E Take a baseboard each. Scatter the word cards face down. Take it in turns to take a word card. Read it. If it matches a picture on your baseboard, place it in the correct space. If not, return it to the pool of cards. Play continues until someone completes their board, or until all the cards are used up. Teaching tips: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your turn and invite your pupil’s help when it is your turn, so s/he gets even more practice. Your pupil will need a lot of blending practice so be patient. If your pupil has difficulty sounding out these words then spend more time practicing blending before playing the game again. Practice reading words with the prefix DE- with these sentence reading rings. Students will read words with the prefix de- in the context of sentences. Each card also includes a bold and colorful image to illustrate each sentence and to help students to learn the meanings of each word. What is Included: This resource includes one reading ring for the prefix de. There are seven cards each featuring a different word with the prefix de. The words included in this set are: defrost, depleted, deciduous, decision, deflate, defended, descended, designated, depend, deconstructed, and described. When to Use Early Finishers - If students finish their work early, they can use these reading rings for extra practice. Small Group Work - Teachers can use these reading rings to target small groups of students who need more practice reading words with prefixes. Independent Practice - Students can work independently at their desks to read this set of prefix cards. Morning Work - Students can read and review this reading ring for morning work as their classmates arrive to class. How to Make: Teachers will print out the pages and cut each card apart. This is a set of print and go CVC Literacy Centers that is perfect for early kindergarten students. It is a PDF of 42 pages. Your students will practice beginning sounds, middle sounds, ending sounds, rhyming words, and building CVC words. The cards are fun, bold pictures that are easy to understand. Students will match letter cards to picture cards and build CVC words with boxes showing a picture. It includes three worksheets that could be used for assessments. It does not include an answer key. Implementation Format: These activities could be used in a small group or partner activity or as an individual activity . It is perfect for literacy centers because the activities can be completed in about 10-15 minutes. You can have students complete more than one activity if you want a longer literacy session. Suggestions for use: The center activities include cards that can be used in a pocket chart or sorted on the floor, desk, or table. You could also attach velcro or magnets for sorting on white boards, cookie sheets, etc. Students can use magnet letters or dry erase markers to build CVC words in word building boxes. Standards: CCSS RF.K.2a: recognize and produce rhyming words CCSS RF.K.2d: isolate and produce the initial, medial vowel, and final sound (phonemes) in the three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.
