Catch Me When You Can | A "Whodunnit" mystery about Jack the Ripper

Catch Me When You Can | A "Whodunnit" mystery about Jack the Ripper
Social Studies, Biographies, Grade 6, 7, 8, Activities, Games

I created this simulation to give my middle school students the opportunity to experience the Jack the Ripper phenomena. This simulation does not focus so much on the gory nature of the crime. Instead, the students become the detectives of the Whitechapel district of the London Metropolitan police. It becomes a race to catch Jack. The students get to make decisions and experience the consequences of their decisions as well. The whole class is involved and they are soon very engaged in the investigation. Here is what is included in this simulation: - A Lesson Plan/Procedure to help you organize and run the simulation - A Teacher Part for when you act as the Chief Inspector of District H - Whitechapel - Situation Reports for you to read each round - All the materials for Round #1 - "It Begins" - All the materials for Round #2 - "It Escalates" - All the materials for Round #3 - "The Double Event" - All the materials for Round #4 - "The Murders End?" - A Power Point to help introduce and ask important questions to debrief at the end - Maps of the Whitechapel district I designed the simulation to be completed in a one hour classroom setting. However, you can easily adapt this to whatever time frame or classroom setting you have. I hope you enjoy running the simulation.

Triangle Dice Game: Isosceles, Scalene, Equilateral, Right, Acute, Obtuse

Triangle Dice Game: Isosceles, Scalene, Equilateral, Right, Acute, Obtuse
Math, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Activities, Games

Here's a deceptively simple dice game to practice identifying and creating six kinds of triangles. Three are classified by their angles: acute, right, and obtuse. Three are classified by their side lengths: scalene, equilateral, and isosceles. Use this game to reinforce the definitions of each of these six triangles in a geometry/measurement unit. Students work independently or in small groups. Each player needs two dice. They roll them and use the two numbers as side lengths in centimetres for a triangle. They draw the triangle in one of the boxes on their paper and measure and label the third side length. Here's where the strategy and critical thinking come in. Can students make six kinds of triangles in less than six turns? Maybe! If they get some lucky rolls! For example, if a student gets a roll with two of the same numbers, they should make an isosceles or equilateral triangle (depending on what angles they draw). But this triangle will also be an acute triangle (or an isosceles right triangle). Clever students (with lucky rolls) should be able to complete the task in less than six turns. Standards: CCSS 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. CCSS 7.G.A.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle. Grades: This game works well in classes from grades 4-7. Ideally students know how to use a ruler and a protractor. Elements and Compounds - Find the Pair - Team Game

Elements and Compounds - Find the Pair - Team Game
Science, Chemistry, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities, Games

This is an engaging and enjoyable memory game on atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, chemical symbols, chemical formulae and naming compounds. Pupils work in teams of three or four. Each team lays out their 42 cards face down in a square and take it in turn to turn over two cards. If the cards are a question and its correct answer, the pupil keeps the pair. If they are not a match they are turned face down and the next pupil gets a turn. This process continues until all cards are matched and the winner is the pupil with the most pairs. If a team member thinks that the selectors pair is not a correct match, they can challenge. Pupils are encouraged to check their books for the correct answer but the teacher also has a quick-check answer sheet. If the challenge is correct, the challenger keeps the pair. Included in this Pack. 42 question and answer cards Teacher’s answer sheet. Instruction sheet Preparation Use double-sided printing to copy 1 set per group of 4 pupils. Sheets could be laminated to enable year-on-year use. Cut sheets into cards. Prior Knowledge Required Atoms combine to form molecules. If combining atoms are from the same element, a molecule of an element is formed but if they are from different elements, a molecule of a compound is formed. An element contains only one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different types of atom combined together chemically. Each element has its own symbol. Some symbols are the capitalized first letter of the name of the element . Some symbols have two letters from the name with only the first capitalized. Some symbols are taken from the Latin name of the element. Know that a chemical formula tells you how many atoms of each element are in a compound. Know that if there is no letter after a symbol in a formula, there is only one atom of that element in the compound. Know that if a formula contains brackets, every element inside the bracket is multiplied by that number. Know that compounds ending in ide contain only two elements. Know that compounds containing CO3 are carbonates, SO4 are sulphates and NO3 are nitrates. Know that mono is one, di is two and tri is three. Be able to name and work out the number of atoms of each element in a compound without brackets in its formula. See more resources from Elf Off the Shelf
