Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Recognize and recall construction-industry vocabulary (job roles, machinery, tools, safety gear) through repeated picture-word matching

  • Build working memory for paired vocabulary terms across a game-board matching format

Teaching tips

  • Preview each vocabulary cluster (job roles, machinery, safety gear) on the practice slides before starting the timed matching round.

  • Run the game in PowerPoint's presentation/slideshow mode rather than Normal view, since navigation depends on clickable slide elements.

  • Use as a whole-class activity over a shared Zoom screen, calling on students in turn to choose grid coordinates.

  • Use the 'Start Again' button to reset the board for a second round or a different small group.

Skills covered

  • Construction vocabulary recall — students match picture and word pairs for job roles, machinery, tools, and safety gear.

  • Turn-taking in a shared-screen game — students take turns calling grid coordinates to reveal and match cards.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How are the construction vocabulary terms organized before the matching game begins?

They are grouped into labeled preview slides by category — job roles and machinery (bricklayer, blaster, crane, dump truck, excavator, grader), tools and instruments, and safety gear (hard hat, safety boots, ear protection) — so students see and practice each cluster before those same terms appear as matching pairs in the game.
