Social Studies, ELA, History, History: USA, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Grade 3, 4, 5, Activities

The Tuskegee Airmen is a fifth-grade Level Q book, showcasing the role of Black aviators who fought during WWII after overcoming racism to serve our country. During four years (1942-1946), nearly 1,000 pilots completed training at Tuskegee Army Airfield in Tuskegee, Alabama. Many of these successful pilots went on to serve our country in other leadership capacities after the Civil War. Your students will see the instrumental role that First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt played in gathering support for their training. Students will also learn more about the Tuskegee Airmen’s role in fighting the Germans during this important time in history and how the Black airmen were finally able to be integrated into the military forces. What’s Included 4-page informational text with targeted vocabulary and concepts, and 2 pages of activities that reinforce critical thinking and language arts skills. The National Council for Social Studies’ key learning strands involving Culture and Change; Time, Continuity, and Change; and Power can be applied to this resource. Several ELA Common Core Standards can also be applied, specifically RI.5.1, RI.5.2, and RI.5.3 that deal with explicit text, drawing inferences, key details, summarizing, relationships or interactions between significant ideas, events, and concepts in a historical text.

Number Bonds 6-10 Bingo - Boards 6-10
Math, Fact Families, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Grade 1, 2, 3, Activities, Games

Need a fun, engaging activity for practicing number bonds to 10 with your kiddos? This math bingo game is perfect for getting your students focused on number bonds for numbers 6-10! Preparation: Print and laminate enough Bingo Boards for each student to have one Optional: print, cut and laminate the Playing Squares Print, cut and laminate the Calling Cards. Lamination is optional, but recommended, as it will ensure that the game remains in good condition and can be used for many years to come! To avoid excessive printing and laminating, the Playing Squares could be replaced with other manipulatives such as buttons or counters. Alternatively, students could mark squares off on their Bingo Boards with dry erase markers and then simply clean the boards again after playing (provided that you have laminated the boards) How to Play: Each student needs a Bingo Board and at least 7 Playing Squares (or other manipulatives or a dry erase marker) Shuffle the Calling Cards and place them in a pile. Draw a Calling Card and call out and/or display the contents of the card. Each student looks on their Bingo Board for a block that matches the Calling Card. If they find one, they cover that block with a Playing Square. Draw a new Calling Card and repeat the process. The game continues until somebody wins. To win, a student must shout out “BINGO!” when they have covered three blocks in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). If the Calling Cards run out before anybody wins, simply shuffle them again and continue playing. Please note: Sometimes there may be more than one block on the Bingo Board that matches the Calling Card. The student may only cover one block on a turn. Once that turn is over, the Playing Square may not be moved to cover a different block. This resource includes 5 different bingo board, in colour as well as black and white. "Child Labor Trial" Skit

"Child Labor Trial" Skit
Social Studies, History, History: World, Grade 10, 11, 12, Activities

This is a useful and dramatic enhancement to help begin any lesson about child labor. In my classroom, I have used this to introduce some of the negative outcomes of the Industrial Revolution. Before the class begins I choose a student to represent Elizabeth Bentley. I prep that student and off we go. Once the students are settled, we begin the skit. It is for two people (the student and me). However, it is powerful and based on an actual trial from history. If you are looking to enhance your lesson on the evils of child labor, this will help. After the skit is finished I allow some time to debrief. I let the students ask questions. Here are some of the questions they ask or I ask them from this skit: -What is a flax mill? -What do you mean "hunchback"? -Can you explain again what a "doffer" is? -What was the typical day like for Elizabeth? -What is a "poor house"? -What do you think her future will be like? -How old is she again? When did she begin working? What do you think about this? -Compare Elizabeth's life with yours, what's the difference? -Do you think Elizabeth has hope? Explain... You can take however long you like with this. Usually for me it is about 20 minutes, so it is a great way to begin looking at the topic of child labor in general. You may go any direction in your lesson after this. For me, I use this when we begin looking at the "costs" of the Industrial Revolution.
