Students need to dedicate more time to these areas to meet the Mathematical Practice Standards. In Grade 1, teaching should concentrate mainly on these four key areas: (1) developing strategies for addition and subtraction within 20 ; (2) understanding place value and the relationships between whole numbers, including grouping by tens and ones; (3) developing skills in linear measurement and using length units to measure; and (4) reasoning about the properties of geometric shapes and how they can be composed and decomposed.
