Types of Paragraphs - Make a Magazine Project: How to Write Paragraphs
ELA, Writing, Creative Writing, Strategies, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities, Projects
Types of Paragraphs: Make a Magazine Project: Narrative, Descriptive, Persuasive, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, How-To Paragraphs. This fun and engaging mini-unit helps teach paragraph writing while keeping students interested because they are creating their very own magazine! How to Use: Print a hamburger paragraph handout for each student. Review the parts of an effective paragraph: topic sentence, juicy details, and concluding sentence. Then teach your students about the six types of paragraphs they are going to learn how to write: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and how-to. Each kind of paragraph will be a different part of the magazine. A persuasive paragraph becomes a letter to the editor. A narrative paragraph will be a personal story. A descriptive paragraph will be a travel article. A compare and contrast paragraph will be a product review. A cause and effect paragraph will be a current events article, and a how-to paragraph will be a home maintenance piece. Use one period of class time to draft each paragraph. Students get a handout with some sample ideas and then come up with their own. They draft a 5-sentence paragraph that will become their "article." After each draft, show students the editing handout, and encourage them to edit their own work or trade with a friend. You can also have students hand in their drafts each day for you to edit as well. Once students have their six edited drafts, they can either type them OR write good copies on the included templates. Put them all together, make a title page, and each student now has their own magazine! Extensions: Early finishers can make a crossword puzzle using an online website, or create their own advertisement for their magazine! Grades to Use With: This project is designed for students who are learning how to write effective paragraphs in grades 2-5. What's Included: A total of 16 pages in ready-to-print PDF format Title Page Hamburger Paragraph Handout 6 Draft Pages Proofreading Checklist 7 Pages of Templates for Good Copies

Math Project: How to Make Circle Graphs and Pie Charts
Math, Percentages, Geometry, Graphing, Statistics, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools, Projects, Activities
A six-answer survey question anchors this integrated math project, which has students poll exactly 25 people and tally the responses by hand. From there they convert each answer's tally into a fraction out of 25, an equivalent fraction out of 100, and a percent written as a decimal, following a worked example (4/25 = 16/100 = 16% = 0.16). The next step converts each decimal to a number of degrees by multiplying by 360, with a reminder that all six values must sum to 360 degrees before drawing begins. In the final step, students use a protractor aligned to the circle's center to plot each angle in turn, then add a title, color, and labels to complete their own hand-drawn circle graph.

Political Spectrum Left to Right Political Party Research & Lesson
Social Studies, Government, Research, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Lesson Plans, Activities
Political beliefs across the left-right spectrum are classified on a handout that pairs six paired-belief categories, such as intervene versus leave alone on the economy or change-is-valued versus tradition-is-valued on progress, with seven political labels from communist to fascist. A sorting task then has students cut out twelve specific position statements, such as views on gun ownership or criminal-justice priorities, and place them on a left-center-right continuum before considering where a genuine center position would fall. Students next choose a level of government and research two or three real political parties, plotting each party's position across five issue categories including economy, moral issues, and crime. A closing reflection page asks four open-ended questions about whether beliefs really cluster as neatly as the spectrum suggests and whether an alternative framing could emphasize harmony over division.

Math Mini Unit: Real World Percentages: Converting Test Scores
Math, Percentages, Decimals, Fractions, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Lesson Plans, Teacher Tools, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Math Mini Unit: Converting Scores into Percentages This ready-to-print booklet is a real world math tool for teachers of grades 5-8. The activities inside let students practice and apply their knowledge of percentages, decimals, and fractions practically: to convert their test and assignment scores to a common denominator of 100 so that they can easily compare their learning and growth across several tasks. I find that my students love learning this skill: it makes them feel mature and gives them ownership over their learning. How to Use: This 8-page booklet guides students to calculate their scores as percentages, offering them an interesting hands-on experience in crunching numbers. The mini-unit features various problem-solving methods supported by detailed visuals, explanatory notes, practice questions, and partner-focused activities. The content ranges from dealing with equivalent fractions with easily convertible denominators (10, 20, 25) to complex conversions involving more than one-step. Dividing the numerator by the denominator is also explored as a strategy to use with ANY test score. I go through the pages of the booklet with my students over several classes. We complete some practice problems together as a class, I allow some partner or small group work, and I also assign some questions for students to complete independently. Grades to Use With: This math mini-unit is particularly designed for middle school grades (5-8) or high school special education classes who are learning about the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages and real world applications of these skills. What's Included: This PDF includes an engaging and easy-to-follow 8-page student booklet, along with an instructional page exclusively for teachers—making it ready to use without any additional prep-work needed. Hand-on Fractions Activity: Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Egg Cartons
Math, Fractions, Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, Activities
Hands-on Fractions Activity: Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Egg Cartons is a perfect match for teachers of Grades 3 through 6. This resource aims to introduce improper fractions and mixed numbers to the students using an interactive, hands-on, visual, and practical method. The interesting part of this lesson is its hands-on experience provided by a common household object: egg cartons! By making abstract fraction concepts tangible, this lesson makes learning more accessible for all students. How to Use: Each group of students receives an empty egg carton, counters, and a worksheet for each member. The class then collaboratively works through each specified amount of eggs (3, 6, 8, 14, 19, 30), step-by-step with the teacher's guidance. Students place counters in their concrete eggs cartons, colour in the model on their worksheet, and then write the fraction. This is a great application of the Concrete, Representational, Abstract math teaching philosophy. When possible, students reduce fractions to lowest terms. When there are more than twelve eggs, students get a chance to write an improper fraction and the corresponding mixed number. By using these hands-on tools, the relationship between these two types of fractions should become more clear. This activity offers ample flexibility both in terms of pace as well as delivery mode – it works equally well in a whole class collaboration setting, small group activities, or for individual seat work. It can be used in versatile ways! What's Included: A total of 3 pages in PDF format: Teacher Instructions Worksheet Sample Answer Key Grades to Use With: This lesson is perfect for students in elementary classes in grades 3-6 who are learning about improper fractions and mixed numbers.
