a-e decodable Reading Book Level 1: 23
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Pre-Reading, Phonics, Reading, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1,
This decodable reading book introduces words with the split digraph a-e. It includes a fun game to play after reading the book to consolidate the new a-e words vocabulary. This is book 23 of a series of highly structured, levelled, decodable phonic reading books. Together they form an early phonic reading scheme, which can be used with any program provided the child has learned the necessary sounds and sight words to read each book. They follow on from our previous sets of: CVC Reading Books with matching workbooks Consonant Blends Reading Books with matching workbooks Level 1 Red Books. with matching workbooks These books are best read in sequence. This book contains words with the following sounds: ck, oo, ee, sh, ch, th, ng, ing, ar, or and a-e. Created by an Early Years Specialist Teacher (B. Ed) who is currently tutoring children with profound special needs in reading and writing following over 30 years of teaching phonics. I created these phonic readers as I saw the huge need for highly structured, fun-to-read, truly systematic, early-reading books. They are very popular. Main features: •The Level 1 readers gently introduce sight words, but only those that cannot be learned in a phonetic family, or will be needed before the family has been studied. •All the other words can be sounded out using the necessary phonic knowledge. •Pictures make up for the lack of words, while not encouraging guessing. •Each book tries to tell a simple story. •Each book has been tested on children with severe special needs and those with none – all have loved them as they can read them! •The books should be read in order as words from all five vowel families are gradually introduced, starting with those in the /a/ family. 5 matching workbooks to consolidate learning and to help children to integrate their new reading and spelling skills into everyday literacy. Proper punctuation is only used in the last three books. This is deliberate; it helps all children to access the reading material, including those for whom the introduction of capital letters and strange marks can be very off-putting. Who can use these reading books? All beginner readers of any age and ability Struggling readers of all ages and abilities, including those with severe dyslexia/other processing difficulties Teachers, parents, classroom assistants, private tutors - anyone who needs them! Are these phonic reading books and workbooks aligned with the UK Gov requirements or LETRS? Yes - totally. Though not part of an approved programme they are based on synthetic, very systematic phonics. They are highly structured, repeating vocabulary, introducing sight words slowly and introducing a-e words while practising those listed above that have been learned before. How long are the books? The reading books are either 8 or 12 pages long. Which words do the books contain? Only common sight words and decodable words with digraphs as listed above. Can children guess the text from the pictures? NO! Why are these books FREE when other people's books cost so much? Are they of lesser quality? They are free as I regard the ability to read as being a fundamental right of every living person. Why should some miss out on top-quality resources because they cannot pay for them? In terms of content, they are top quality, carefully planned and sequenced with the aim of helping as many children as possible get started on the phonic road to reading. What is included? 1 PDF print as a booklet, flip on the short edge.

This is a pack of 32 flashcards for words with a consonant blend and a short vowel sound with no more than four sounds. The pack contains words with both an initial and a final blend. Introduction: I made these cards to send home with my pupils for extra practice sounding out these consonant blends words with their parents. They provide a cheap-to-print, effective way to get maximum practice at this vital, foundational reading skill. Order, outline and steps: Simply print and cut up the cards into 32 word cards, a 32 picture cards. Start by having the child sound out the words: lay picture cards face up on the table and stack the word cards in a pile, face up. Take a word card, sound it out to read it. Find the matching picture card and lay them both aside together. Once the pupil gains confidence, games can be made: Turn the above activity into a game by placing ten word cards in a pile face down between the players, and laying the matching pictures face down on the table. The players then take it in turns to select a word card and turn over a picture card. If they match, the player can keep the matching cards. If not, the word card is returned to the bottom of the pile and the picture placed face down on the table once more. The word cards chosen can be selected to give the child practice where needed, either with initial, or final blends or a mixture of both. Who are the flashcards for?
