Examining Carter’s ‘Malaise' Speech - NPR Audio Analysis
Social Studies, Government, History, History: USA, Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities
Former President Jimmy Carter did not deliver a speech specifically referred to as the "Malaise Speech." However, he did give a speech in 1979 that is commonly known as the "Crisis of Confidence" speech. This speech is sometimes inaccurately referred to as the "Malaise Speech." Let me provide some information about it. On July 15, 1979, President Jimmy Carter delivered a televised address to the nation in response to the economic challenges and energy crisis that the United States was facing at the time. The speech aimed to address the feelings of frustration, uncertainty, and a lack of confidence that many Americans were experiencing. In the speech, President Carter acknowledged the sense of crisis and highlighted the need for collective action to overcome the challenges. He discussed the energy crisis, emphasizing the importance of conservation and reducing dependence on foreign oil. President Carter also addressed issues of inflation, unemployment, and the overall economic situation, urging Americans to embrace a spirit of sacrifice and work towards a brighter future. While President Carter did not explicitly use the term "malaise" in his speech, the term came to be associated with it due to media coverage and public perception. The speech received mixed reactions, with some applauding Carter's honesty and call for national unity, while others criticized him for what they perceived as a lack of optimism and leadership. It's worth noting that the speech is now often viewed in a more positive light, with many considering it a significant moment of candor and a call to action during a challenging period in American history. However, it did not have the immediate positive impact on public opinion that President Carter had hoped for, and he faced challenges during his presidency, including an unsuccessful re-election bid in 1980. So, while there is no specific "Malaise Speech" by President Jimmy Carter, the term has become associated with his 1979 address, commonly known as the "Crisis of Confidence" speech. This product comes with an audio link to NPR's analysis of the impact of Carter's 'Malaise' speech. The audio includes analysis of the speech as well as two short excerpts from the actually speech by Jimmy Carter. This product also provides students with some background information about the energy and economic crisis of the 1970s. Lastly, this product includes 7 comprehension questions for students to answer from the story (includes teacher key). Black History Month: 32 Inspirational Posters
, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Posters, Classroom Decor
Black History Month is an annual observance that takes place in February in the United States (and in October in the United Kingdom and Canada). It is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans. The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the efforts of Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian and scholar. In 1926, Woodson established "Negro History Week" to bring attention to the neglected history and accomplishments of Black individuals. This week was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two prominent figures in the fight against slavery and for civil rights. Over time, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month. In 1976, it was officially recognized by the U.S. government and expanded to encompass the entire month of February. The month-long observance provides an opportunity to delve deeper into African American history, culture, and the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. During Black History Month, various events, activities, and programs are organized to educate and raise awareness about the contributions of African Americans. Schools, universities, museums, community organizations, and other institutions often host lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, film screenings, and performances that highlight the achievements and experiences of Black individuals throughout history. Black History Month is an important time for reflection, learning, and honoring the achievements and struggles of African Americans. It serves as a reminder of the resilience, strength, and significant impact that Black individuals have had on society, as well as the ongoing need for social justice and equality for all. This product includes 32 inspirational quotes from various African American figures. The quotes will be a tremendous addition to any classroom and will inspire your students! These posters are visually appealing and will look amazing on any bulletin board ! They help create an excellent display for Black History Month!
