Phonics / Digraphs for 1st and 2nd Grade: Beginning Sounds: SH, TH, WH and PH

This unit focuses only on the Beginning Digraph sounds. Learning how to read can be the most challenging activity for many students and for a teacher. A digraph in the English language are two letters put together that represents a single sound or phoneme. Understanding that the combination of letters can make one sound can be difficult to master and requires repetitive practice of reading and writing these words with these sounds. There are other phonics units that I sell that focuses on the Ending digraph sounds, and one that focuses on all three digraph sounds in the Beginning, Middle and End. Reading can be made easier with these phonic helps that repeatedly encourage students to practice these Beginning Digraph sounds. Activities include reading comprehension and identifying the digraphs in their reading, writing their answers to questions regarding the paragraph, identifying additional beginning digraph words in sentences using a word bank, matching words with pictures, spinning a paperclip activity where students will write the word with the digraph sound, and lastly a fun wordsearch with the beginning digraph words. These activities are for each digraph so there is plenty of opportunities for students to practice their comprehension reading skills and phonic sounds. Students will practice the following Beginning Digraph sounds: sh, th, wh, and ph. Teachers can use this resource in whole group, individually with students, students can practice with each other in centers, or they can be assigned as homework. Worksheets are also differentiated for each Beginning Digraph sound for all young learners which makes it perfect for all 1st - 2nd graders. A total of 26 pages full of reading and phonic activities. Along with reading and writing, there are matching, cutting, and pasting activities. Word searches and spin and make a word activity are also a part of this packet which make learning to read these phonic sounds entertaining for young learners. BEGINNING SOUNDS Fall/Autumn Worksheets and Learning Activities

The Fall season is upon us and what better way to add it to your ELA curriculum than with these Autumn worksheets and learning activities. Your Pre-K and Kindergarten learners will have a great time practicing their beginning sounds and writing skills with turkeys, footballs, scarecrows, and many more Fall-themed items. Included in this product you will find 7 worksheets that allow your kiddos to build skills in letter identification, letter sounds, coloring, cutting, gluing, and writing. Along with the worksheets, there is a set of flashcards which can be used in vocabulary building. With minor preparation, you will also have 2 learning games. Your Pre-K and Kindergarten learners can attach clothes pins to word cards in order to complete the word with the appropriate beginning letter/sound. They will also have the opportunity to match uppercase and lowercase letter cards with corresponding picture cards. As an added bonus, this product includes a fun Power Point activity . In it, your learners will follow Sam the Squirrel through a set of 25 slides as they show a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” according to the Fall-themed pictures and letters shown on each slide. Some sounds contain print-and-go games to make learning fun. AR and A-E each contain a board game. Who are these worksheets for? I have written them for pupils who struggle with processing information - especially sounds. This includes children who are DYSLEXIC or have ANY other kind of processing disorder. Such children may have failed with other methods of teaching phonics. Such pupils need activities that: ·are highly structured - one tiny step at a time building on the one before using only a limited number of words to start with and only using words that the child has already learnt to sound out, with no nasty surprises. ·Have only a little on each pageas these pupils tire easily. What makes these worksheets special? I have a powerful three-step process which I use with my special needs pupils, which is worked out over the course of the 12 worksheets: 1. See it!where we focus on becoming aware of the new sound in words. This involves first hearing the new sound in words and then seeing it in words (tracking). 2. Sound-it-out!Having learnt to see the new sound in words, we learn to sound out these words to read and write them. We begin by usingsound-it-out boxesfor reading and spelling which help the child to segment the word prior to blending the sounds together. Once the child can read and write individual words, we work on fluency by building familiarity with the common words in the new sound family. Once the child can sound the words out to read and spell confidently, we move on to recognising them/using them in longer reading and dictation passages, as soon as the child is able. I provide 2 reading passages with comprehension exercises and one dictation passage, with a page in the workbook dedicated to it, with room for a picture, which again cements understanding. 3. Write it! Incorporated into the above two steps, we constantly write the new sound. This adds a multi-sensory dimension to our work - we see with our eyes, we sound it with our mouth parts and voice, and then we move by writing. All three steps work together to help the child feel in control of his/her learning and to become a successful, confident learner. We finish each sound (except the Consonant L-Blends) with a dictation which culminates our work before we move on to the next sound. I try to give this a week after we finish the book, to act as revision. The dictation: Read this passage to your pupil, who should write it. Have the child read his/her work and check for errors. Make sure the writing is completely accurate before saying the child has finished, including full stops and capital letters correctly used. Flashcards are included in most books. Phonic Games are also included for AR and A-E to make learning more fun! A pack of 12 CVC Words Decodable Phonic reading books Plus 2 matching phonic workbooks to support learning. Created by an Early Years Specialist Teacher (B. Ed) who is currently tutoring children with profound special needs in reading and writing following over 30 years of teaching phonics. I created these phonic readers as I saw the huge need for highly structured, fun-to-read, early-reading books. They are very popular. Phonics for 1st and 2nd Grade: Help Students Learn Long U Words: U_E, EW, OO, UE, UI and OU

This Unit focuses on the Long U Sounds! Learning how to read can be the most challenging activity for students and for a teacher. Understanding that the combination of letters can make the same vowel sound requires lots of repetitive practice of reading and writing these words with these sounds. There are other phonics units that I sell that focuses on the Long A sound with a combination of different letters, the Long E sound with a combination of different letters, the Long I sound with a combination of different letters, and the Long O sound with a combination of different letters. Reading can be made easier with these phonic helps that repeatedly encourage students to practice these Long U sounds. Activities include reading comprehension and identifying the Long U in their reading, writing their answers to questions regarding the paragraph, identifying additional Long U words in sentences using a word bank, matching words with pictures, spinning a paperclip activity where students will write the word with the Long U sound, and lastly a fun wordsearch with variations of Long U words. These activities are for each long vowel words that are focused on the Long U sounds so there are plenty of opportunities for students to practice their comprehension reading skills and phonic sounds. This CVC unit is engaging for students as they practice reading and learning the short vowel sounds while students cut and make the words, trace the words, write the words, and stamp out the words. Reading short vowel / rhyming words is an introduction to reading. Repetitive practice of reading these words is also another fundamental practice to help students read. In this unit, students will practice word families that have the same ending. Teach students that word families rhyme and only have a different beginning sound. For each word family, students will practice making, tracing, writing, or stamping six different words. Some of the words are proper nouns or names given to people or pets. There are also nonsensical words that are not real. The purpose of these words is to teach how to sound out words only within the same word family. File contains the following word family worksheets : ad, an, at, ed, en, et, in, ip, it, og, op, ot, ug, un, ut. It also includes all the letters needed to cut out for the "make it" worksheets . These worksheets are designed for a younger child, or an older child with processing difficulties both of whom may need less on a page. These worksheets break learning down into small, bite-sized steps to enable very young learners, or those with special needs to succeed. These worksheets are based on my 3-step process: see it, sound it out, write it. By using the hand, we strengthen the links in the brain that help both reading and spelling. Reading and spelling are two sides of the same coin. Together, both are stronger. Order, Outline and Steps Each blend is introduced aurally. To begin with, the child is asked to colour the picture that starts with a given blend. There are 2 differentiated worksheets for each blend. A further set of worksheets asks children to sort words by their initial blend - there are 2 differentiated worksheets for this activity. Another set gives the child practice writing the blend - providing a multisensory component. We then move into reading and spelling words with a consonant blend and a short vowel sound - words like 'plum' and 'clap'. The next section gives further practice playing with blends and endings - word making. We then put the blends words into sentences and further into short paragraphs. We finish with a game. Beginning with a set of flash cards, they’ll build vocabulary with Fall/Autum words such as pumpkin, squirrel, acorn, leaf, and sweater. Next, they’ll move on to complete 7 worksheets that focus on ending sounds. Within the worksheets they will identify uppercase and lowercase letters, match pictures to the letter with the corresponding ending sound, color Fall/Autumn icons, write uppercase and lowercase letters that match the ending sounds of pictures, and practice cutting and gluing skills. Along with the worksheets, there are 3 learning activities. In the first activity , your learners will use a letter tile or clothespin to complete the Fall/Autumn vocabulary word with its appropriate ending sound.
