Product description
From the author
This Unit focuses on the Long U Sounds!
Learning how to read can be the most challenging activity for students and for a teacher.
Understanding that the combination of letters can make the same vowel sound requires lots of repetitive practice of reading and writing these words with these sounds.
There are other phonics units that I sell that focuses on the Long A sound with a combination of different letters, the Long E sound with a combination of different letters, the Long I sound with a combination of different letters, and the Long O sound with a combination of different letters.
Reading can be made easier with these phonic helps that repeatedly encourage students to practice these Long U sounds. Activities include reading comprehension and identifying the Long U in their reading, writing their answers to questions regarding the paragraph, identifying additional Long U words in sentences using a word bank, matching words with pictures, spinning a paperclip activity where students will write the word with the Long U sound, and lastly a fun wordsearch with variations of Long U words.
These activities are for each long vowel words that are focused on the Long U sounds so there are plenty of opportunities for students to practice their comprehension reading skills and phonic sounds.
Students will practice the following Long U Word sounds: U_E, EW, OO, UE, UI and OU. Teachers can use this resource in whole group, individually with students, students can practice with each other in centers, or these worksheets can be assigned as homework.
Each story uses the same reading text in two formats with different response loads. Choose the format to suit students’ needs.
The 37-page PDF includes 34 activity pages and three supporting pages. Along with reading and writing there are matching, cutting, and pasting activities. Word searches and spin and make a word activity are also a part of this packet which make learning to read these phonic sounds entertaining for young learners.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Recognize and read words containing the six common long-U spelling patterns: u_e, ew, oo, ue, ui, and ou.
Use context clues within a word bank to correctly complete cloze sentences with long-U words.
Match spoken/written long-U vocabulary words to their corresponding pictures.
Teaching tips
Read each of the 6 short stories aloud first so students hear the target sound before they color and identify the pattern words in the text.
Choose the response load while keeping the reading text the same: the fuller format has five word-copy spaces, three questions and cloze practice; the shorter format has three word-copy spaces and two questions.
Provide a paperclip and pencil for the spinners, plus scissors and glue for matching. The 37-page PDF has 34 activity pages and three supporting pages.
Skills covered
Long-vowel spelling pattern recognition — students identify and color long-U words within 6 short stories (u_e, ew, oo, ue, ui, ou).
Cloze/context-clue reading — students select the correct word from a word bank to complete fill-in-the-blank sentences for each pattern.
Word building and vocabulary matching — students spin letters to build real words (4 of 6 patterns) and match written words to pictures via cut-and-paste.
Good to know
Questions teachers ask about this resource
Are all 6 sound patterns covered with the exact same set of activities?
Almost — each of the 6 patterns gets a differentiated story with comprehension questions, a fill-in-the-blank page, a matching page, and a word search, but only 4 of the 6 patterns (u_e, ew, oo, and ue) include the 'spin and make a word' page; the ui and ou sections do not have it.
