Here’s an engaging, summer-themed, real-world math budget project for your middle grades students (in grades 5-8). The math project incorporates useful personal finance and financial literacy skills along with realistic budgeting. Each student in your class is going to plan their purchases for a summer camping trip with friends! How to Use: You will assign each student in your class a budget (I recommend between $400-$1,750). A $400 budget will be challenging, and the student might only be able to bring one friend and buy mainly low-cost items. On the other hand, a $1,750 budget will be much more luxurious, and that student will be able to more friends and choose many fancy items. Students work within their budgets, picking a low, middle, or high-cost choice for each category (tent, sleeping bag, cooler chairs, food and more). Certain items must be multiplied by the total number of campers while others (like a stove) do not. Students will add up their eleven choices and make sure they stay within their budget. They might need to make a few trade-offs and skip desired items to ensure they have the things they can't camp without. Finally, your students will calculate how much money they have left, and they will answer reflection questions shopping within a budget, earning more money, or buying things used. In this math lesson, your students will Learn the definitions of multiplication, division, and estimating Determine which operation to use (multiplication or division) to solve a real-life word problem Use rounding and benchmarks to estimate a solution Calculate the solution with the standard algorithm Think of another way to reach the solution Self-assess their skill Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in grades 4-6 who are learning and/or practicing their multiplication and division skills using the standard algorithm AND a variety of other estimating and benchmark methods. It includes three-digit products, one-digit divisors, and division with remainders. How to Use: Go over the first page together as a class. Review the definitions of multiplication, division, and estimating. Then complete the first word problem together- modelling the 4 steps: choose the operation, estimate, solve, and solve using an alternate method. Then you can let students work on the five other problems independently or in small groups. They could do some of the problems in class and a couple of them for homework. I have included a quick self- assessment at the end, so you can see which steps students are confident with and which are a bit more challenging. My students often struggle to think of an alternate method to solve the problem, so I can target some small group support for that skill. Winter No Prep Math Worksheets (VA SOL aligned): Print these off and use them as formative assessments , classwork, homework, or when you need to be out for a sub day. They cover the following topics: -place value, rounding, comparing, and ordering numbers -bar graphs and pictographs -addition and subtraction and word problems -Multiplication and division -telling time (to the nearest minute), elapsed time (to the nearest hour), and equivalent time -counting money, comparing money, and making change -measuring length and capacity There are two sets of worksheets. The first set has between 8-10 questions per topic, except graphing which has fewer. Then there is a second set for those students who have the accommodation of shortening assignments, students who struggle to complete their work, or students who need to redo a sheet to get more practice. This second set has no more than 5 questions per topic, though it still covers all the topics listed above. The product also comes with an answer key for each worksheet. While all the worksheets are two-sided (or more), the answer keys are all on one page to make grading easier. This product was created with the 3rd grade Virginia SOLs, covering the SOLs of 3.1, 3.3, 3.15, 3.4, 3.6, and 3.9. It can still be used by other grades/states. They will also be updated to reflect the changes to the SOLs by winter next year. The beauty of these is you print them, copy them, and go.
