Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
- Recall multiplication facts across the times tables from 1 to 12
- Multiply two-digit numbers by multiples of 5, 10 and 20
- Write products as number words, including hundreds and thousands
- Use crossword letter constraints to self-check a product
Teaching tips
- Answers go in as number words, so students need number-word spelling before they start - the crossword will not fit otherwise, which makes spelling a built-in self-check
- The six sets are ordered by difficulty, so the pack works as a differentiated sequence: give Basic Multiplication and Multiplying by 4 and 5 to students still building fact fluency, and the Large sets to those ready for two-digit work
- The "Did you know" line on each puzzle is a ready-made warm-up prompt
- Check the section titles against the clues before assigning - the "Multiplying by 6 and 7" set includes 7 x 10, 7 x 11 and 7 x 12, and the "8 and 9" set includes 10 x 12 and 12 x 12
Skills covered
- Multiplication facts
- Two-digit multiplication
- Number words
- Spelling number names
- Puzzle problem solving
Good to know
Questions teachers ask about this resource
Is there an answer key?
Yes - a combined ANSWERS section listing the across and down answers for all six puzzles, matching what the product record says.
How do students write the answers?
As number words, not digits - the answer to 3 x 3 is entered as "Nine" and 12 x 12 as "One Hundred Forty-Four".
How many puzzles are there?
Six, ordered by difficulty from Basic Multiplication to Extra Large Multiplication.
What grade level is this for?
No grade is stated. The early sets are single-digit fact practice (Grade 3) while the last two require two-digit multiplication such as 50 x 15 (Grade 5 to 6), so it spans a wide band.
