Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Identify daily habits as healthy or unhealthy

  • Sort foods into healthy and unhealthy categories

  • Sequence the steps of a daily hygiene routine

  • State a personal health goal in writing or drawing

Teaching tips

  • Use the food sort page as a hands-on cut-and-paste center rather than a worksheet completed at a desk

  • Read the Pete the Pig story aloud before the hygiene sequencing page so students have the narrative fresh for ordering the steps

  • Pair the habit-labeling worksheet with a class discussion, since several items (TV, video games, snacks) invite differing opinions

  • Save the goal-setting page to revisit later in the unit or year to check whether students met their stated goal

Skills covered

  • Food classification — students cut and sort pictures of foods into healthy and unhealthy columns.

  • Habit evaluation — students label seven daily behaviors, such as brushing teeth or eating cookies for dinner, as healthy or unhealthy.

  • Sequencing — students order four steps of a tooth-brushing routine using first/next/then/last language.

  • Goal setting — students write or draw one personal health goal, such as brushing twice daily.

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How do the six worksheets build from one health concept to the next?

They move from sorting healthy and unhealthy foods, to circling physical activities, to labeling daily habits, to sequencing a hygiene routine, and finally to writing a personal health goal, with each page headed "Personal Health Unit 1."

What is the role of the Pete the Pig story at the end of the unit?

It retells the hygiene message through a numbered story about a pig who gets muddy and dirty, then washes with soap, giving students a character-based recap of the unit's core habit.
