Following the FernGully movie guide will utilize both writing and science concepts (conservation, natural resources, pollution and human interaction), for students to provide evidence of how these concepts are used. Movies bring lessons to life by showing science concepts and even social issues in an entertaining way. Movie guides help students focus on important details throughout at the movie and think critically about what they watch. Movie Synopsis: Crysta is a fairy who lives in FernGully, a rainforest in Australia, and has never seen a human before. Growing up, she is told humans no longer exist. When a logging company comes near the rainforest, to cut down the trees for human use, she sees that they do exist and she even meets one! Crysta accidentally shrinks one of the workers - a boy named Zak. Now as small as a fairy, Zak sees the damage that the company does (and humans do) and helps Crysta stop the company and an evil entity, named Hexxus. Hexxus feeds off pollution that the humans are creating. Many species are introduced throughout the movie and can be used to discuss ecosystems, if needed. Speaking and listening standards are also covered, depending on how many of the above topics you discuss in your classroom. The movie guide provides an opportunity for teachers to "get back" some of that class time at the end of a unit, whether needed for grading projects, working one on one with students, or finishing up assessments. Grocery Game : Estimating, Adding, and Multiplying Decimals - Winter Holidays Edition This resource is a fun, interactive math game designed for students in grades 3-6. It will help your students practice adding and multiplying decimals while they shop to hit the target amount! The game includes 4 rounds with grocery shopping items for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa holidays. Every round presents five food items to the students who practice estimating costs to manage a given budget. Whole class activity: This engaging exercise makes learning mathematical concepts more concrete than abstract learning alone. Students are shopping for a purpose! Realistic applications make education impactful and enjoyable for students, and math games are always a hit with my students! How to Use: This is a fun, whole class activity that you need to be able to project in your classroom on an interactive whiteboard. It is a Powerpoint presentation so you can move the boxes that cover the prices of each item after the students have guessed the price- just like on a real game show! You give your students a target budget (for example between $50-52). The smaller the budget range, the more challenging it will be. Students have to buy at least four of the items. Ask one student to choose one item at a time. The student guesses the price and chooses how many they want to buy of it. Then you reveal the price, all of the students students calculate how much they have spent, and you move on to the next item! Grades to Use With: This is a fun game for grades 3-6 when you are studying money, grocery shopping, and decimal operations. Even kids in middle school will have fun playing along! Here's a ready-to-print set of 5 math stations that can supplement a middle grads math unit about area, perimeter, and volume of right-angled shapes. Math centers or stations are a wonderful way to get your students engaged in what they learn as they move around the classroom and work cooperatively with their classmates. Even when your students are in the intermediate or middle school grades, they can benefit from a wide variety of teaching techniques including the implementation of stations or learning centres! But creating these stations takes a lot of time, so let me do it for you! Station 1: This stations gives students four word problems to sovle that all involve geometry skills about area, perimeter, and volume. Station 2: This station gives students hand-on practice as they measure the volume of a real cardboard box. You will need to provide a few boxes and rulers for your students. Station 3: This station lets students design a backyard with different zones of grass, cement, a pool and more. They calculate the area and cost of each zone. Station 4: This station lets students practice calculating area and perimeter of complex shapes and they can try an online game! Station 5: This station lets students apply their knowledge to a real world math problem, and they practice carefully explaining their mathematical thinking in pictures and words. Break your students into 5 groups and have them rotate through the centers in 15 minute increments. Allow students to start at one station and move to another at their own pace as long as no station gets too crowded. Assign only one or two stations that work best for your students. Give a station as a quick review or homework assignment. Grades to Use With: These stations work well in grades 4-7 classes or high school special education.
