Crosswords in Depth
Structure
Each crossword clue is written in simplified language to suit early readers, and follows a strict number-and-clue format (e.g., 1.A shape with four sides). Students complete each puzzle using the themed vocabulary provided, helping to build both content knowledge and spelling confidence.
Each completed set includes:
A questions section with clearly formatted clues
An answers section to support teacher checking or independent correction
A Did You Know? fact tied to the topic (one per set) to add curiosity and cross-curricular value
Themes Included
The crosswords cover a wide variety of engaging, age-appropriate themes such as:
Seasons & Holidays (e.g., Winter, Easter, Valentineโs Day)
Math Concepts (e.g., Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division)
Everyday Topics (e.g., School, Colors, Animals, Weather)
Special Units (e.g., Health, Earth Day, Sports, Graduation, Kindness)
Each theme is carefully selected to reflect the experiences and interests of young learners, while reinforcing vocabulary and comprehension.

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Identify a two-dimensional shape from a description of its sides, corners or curvature
Spell shape names accurately enough to fit a crossword grid, including oval, diamond and rectangle
Tell a defining property from a passing resemblance, as with the heart and star clues that describe outline rather than side count
Teaching tips
The eight clues describe properties rather than showing pictures, so students who recognise shapes by sight alone will need the vocabulary of sides and corners first
The solutions sheet doubles as a preview of the whole series; it is worth reading before deciding whether the wider set covers the vocabulary your unit needs
Puzzles listed further down that sheet โ hemisphere, torus, parallelogram, trapezoid โ sit well above the basic sample, so use the word lists to judge which sets suit your class
One page takes only a few minutes, which makes this a natural morning-work or early-finisher sheet rather than a lesson in itself
Skills covered
Shape identification from properties โ students read "A shape with four sides, tilted like a kite" or "A shape with five or more points" and name the figure, without a picture to match against.
Geometry vocabulary spelling โ answers such as triangle, rectangle, diamond and oval have to be spelled correctly into the grid.
Distinguishing defining from non-defining features โ the clues for square and triangle name side and corner counts, while the heart and star clues describe outline, so students learn which kind of description a shape name rests on.
Independent puzzle work โ the page carries its clue list and grid together, ready for a centre or a morning slot with no preparation.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
What does the solutions sheet cover?
The words for all six crosswords in the Shapes series, not just the one printed here. It lists Basic Shapes, 3D Shapes, Shapes in Everyday Life, a puzzle of shape-describing words, Fun & Unique Shapes, and Jobs & Tools Using Shapes. The puzzle grid supplied in this sample is Basic Shapes.
What sort of vocabulary do the other five puzzles use?
They widen considerably. The 3D set asks for hemisphere, torus, cylinder and rectangular prism; the everyday-life set for dice, stop sign, pizza slice and tabletop; one set for describing words such as symmetrical, narrow and curved; another for octagon, parallelogram, trapezoid and crescent; and the last for jobs โ architect, engineer, mapmaker, carpenter.
