Financial Literacy: My Party Budget- Decimals and Percentages Application
Life Studies, Finance, Home Economics, Math, Percentages, Decimals, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Projects
Financial Literacy: My Party Budget- Decimals and Percentages Application Unlock mathematics’ real-world influence with this practical math project for students in grades 5-8. This tool allows students to sharpen their intermediate math skills, particularly applying percentage calculations and decimal operations to manage a budget consciously - a vital lesson in financial literacy. This versatile resource is ideal for grades 5 to 8 classrooms as well as high school special education environments where budgeting practice complements life skills training. How to Use: Give each student a party budget. You can choose to give everyone the same budget, OR this is a great way to differentiate. Give students with emerging understanding a budget of $100 (which is easy to work with) and give students who need a challenge a budget such as $240, which will result in more complex calculations. This will also stimulate discussions about budgeting in general and the challenge of planning with less money. Students need to partition their hypothetical party budget across varied cost categories like food, decorations and entertainment by employing basic percent in decimal form and understanding addition and multiplication of decimals. For example, they might decide to spend 50% of their budget on food because that is their favourite part of a party. They will calculate 50% of their total budget. This skill application brings relevance to numbers through experiential learning. You can decide if students should complete calculations by hand or if using a calculator is allowed. Also, a complete sample answer key is included that you can show to your students to demonstrate the task. Finally, students complete shopping research and choose items online or in store flyers. This fosters strategic thinking when managing limited resources. You can have a discussion about making tradeoffs (for example, choosing frozen pizza instead of fresh to have extra money for a party activity OR inviting fewer guests to have more money for party favours per person). What's Included: A total of 8 pages in PDF Format Title Page Teacher Instructions 3 Page Student Worksheets 3 Page Sample Answer Key

Sort/Group Non-Identical objects - early learner activity
Special Resources, Special Education Needs (SEN), Speech Therapy, Math, Early Math, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Activities
The activity involves sorting and grouping different non-identical items, which can be used to develop cognitive skills such as categorization, visual discrimination, and problem-solving. To begin the activity , the learner is presented with a sorting picture. Pictures include in this activity : dog doughnut ice cream bar apple shoes chair butterfly hotdog car rabbit socks happy face The next step is to provide the learner with six corresponding sorting cards, each picture non identical to the sorting picture. The items on the sorting cards may vary in color, size, shape, and other attributes, which allows the learner to practice visual discrimination and identify key characteristics of each category. The learner's task is to sort/group each individual sorting card to the correct sorting picture. This requires the learner to analyze and compare the different items, and determine which picture they belong to based on their similarities and differences. As the learner progresses through the activity , they can be challenged to group the items in different ways, such as by color, size, shape, or texture. This encourages the learner to think creatively and develop flexible thinking skills. This early learning sorting activity provides an engaging and interactive way to develop cognitive skills and promote learning in a fun and playful manner. This activity is easy to create and is clean and clear of visual distractions which allows the learner to focus on the task at hand. First print and laminate all cards, then cut out the individual sorting cards and velcro to the corresponding picture activity mat. If have a coil binder you can coil bind this activity , or else you can three hole punch the mats and put them in a binder or use binding rings for many years of teaching and learning. Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Factors, Multiples, Prime, Composite
Math, Fact Families, Multiplication and Division, Division, Numbers, Multiplication, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Centers, Activities
This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. Math stations or centers are a great way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work collaboratively with their peers. Even when students are in middle school or the intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations or centres! But they are a lot of work to prepare! Let me do the work for you! Station 1: Students solve 4 riddles/word problems involving factors and multiples. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a game using 10-sided dice. (supplies needed: pairs of dice) Station 3: Students choose two numbers to investigate and learn about common factors and multiples. (optional: set out an anchor chart about factors vs multiples) Station 4: Students review prime and composite numbers and make prime factor trees. (optional: set out laptops or tablets for the online game extension) Station 5: Students apply what they have learned to a real-life problem, and practice writing and drawing about their mathematical thinking. (optional: set out counters for students to use) Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Grades to Use With: These stations work well in grades 4-7 classes or high school special education. Standards: CCSS4.OA.B.4 Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is prime or composite. CCSS6.NS.B.4 Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2). 6th Grade Math: Statistics and Probability Bundle: 4 Activities
Math, Statistics, Graphing, Money, Common Core, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities
Do you need some new ideas for your 6th grade math unit to meet the Common Core State Standards for Statistics and Probability? Here is a ready-to-go bundle with four fun real-life activities to incorporate into your unit plan. 1) Statistical Questions: Students are taught what a statistical question is: a question that has numerical answers that vary.. 8 questions are included. Students need to identify if they are statistical questions or not. If they are, students think of how the data might be collected. If they are not, students explain what aspects of a statistical question are missing. Finally, students write 4 questions of their own (one should not be a statistical question) and they trade with a friend to see if they can identify the odd one out. 2) Dot Plots and Histograms: Students will collect numerical data through a survey and create their own dot plots and histograms to display their findings! This gives them a sense of ownership over their learning, and it is a great way to assess their skills! Discussion questions and self- assessment are included. 3) Math Stations: Statistics and Probability: Station 3 in particular has students create a dot plot and calculate the mean, median and mode of provided data. They can also do the probability stations if you want to address those skills. 4) Mean, Median and Interquartile Range of Hourly Wages: From a cashier to a taxi driver to an account to a CEO, students are given 10 realistic hourly wages. First, they create a histogram to display the data. Next, they write the wages in order from smallest to largest. They use this information to calculate the mean, the median, and the interquartile range. After that, they eliminate the outlier (the CEO wage) and recalculate the same statistics. Discussion questions are included. Grades to Use With: This bundle is designed for students in Grade 6, but can be used for Grade 5 enrichment, Grade 7 or 8 review, or high school special education classes. What's Included: 20 Page PDF with 4 Activities

On the mats, there is mindfulness coloring/zentangle coloring, mazes, word search, reflections, SEL prompts, and more. For example on one of the mats, there is a mindfulness coloring of an anchor with the prompt to encourage students to think about what grounds them as they color. There is also a squiggle and students are encouraged to create their own unique design from it. There is also a heart maze, a triangle breath image, and an image of a turtle to encourage students to think of what brings them strength. On another mat, there is a line of different emojis and they are asked to circle how they feel in that moment. There is also a mindfulness coloring of a hot air balloon and the prompt is for them to imagine all of their worries are in the basket and as they color, they are asked to think of their worries floating away. On that same mat, there is a rainbow breath exercise and an image of a brick wall with the prompt for students to write in the bricks what gives them a solid foundation; their values, strengths, and purposes in life. Each mat is unique but offers opportunities for students to take a moment to relax, get their minds off their daily stress, and have fun. It is best to print these on legal-size paper so images and text are a good size with plenty of room for students to write and draw.
