Heat and Light Investigation

Heat and Light Investigation
Science, Physics, Grade 3, 4, 5, Activities

This is a Heat and Light Investigation. This small unit is a simple investigation into the sun as a heat source, along with a quick look at other sources of heat. Students will explore the vocabulary attached to the topic, how objects differ when in direct sunlight vs. in the shade, how living things are affected by the sun and its light, mechanical and electrical heat sources, and misconceptions about heat sources. At the end of the unit there is a quiz for you to give your students and there are answer keys wherever possible. • Explain to students that they will be working in groups to create a set of four movements they feel illustrate the meaning of one of the vocabulary words they’ve learned. • Separate your students into groups of three or four. • Give each group one of the Vocabulary Movement Cards. • As they are making their movements, they will also be verbally incorporating the vocabulary word and its definition. Example: if their word is ‘machine’, as they are doing their first movement they will say, “machine”. As they do their second movement they might say, “a device made to consume energy.” For the third movement they could say, “to produce another form of energy,” and for the fourth say, “to do some kind of work!” • Encourage students to USE THEIR SPACE: go high, low, and in between! • Give students enough time to come up with the movements as a group, practice the movements, and get ready to teach their movements to the rest of the class.

Punctuation Pasta Project

Punctuation Pasta Project
ELA, Grammar, Grade 4, 5, 6, Activities, Projects

This is a Punctuation Pasta Project for big kids! This project is focused on commas, parentheses, and dashes with a bonus quotation mark review included. I love room transformations; students are going to remember moments and therefore, the content associated with those moments much more easily. Create an Italian restaurant in your classroom with plastic tablecloths or red and white butcher paper. I bought glass candleholders & electric tealights at the dollar store that I repurpose for other room transformations. Italian music/photos on the board, a crockpot full of simmering tomato sauce & some breadsticks on the tables hit all the senses! Place a table tent and one punctuation card per pair of students on each table. You will also need a plate or bowl full of dried pasta. For this particular lesson, you will need spaghetti or fettuccini for the dashes, small elbow macaroni for commas & quotation marks, & large elbow macaroni for parentheses. Students simply place the pasta in the spots on the cards where the punctuation is missing. I do one activity at a time (have students complete with their partner and then go over answer key before distributing next card). Early finishers can work on pasta plate practice activity. This lesson was specifically designed for 6th grade, and the accompanying PowerPoint teaches L.6.2a, but the pasta punctuation cards can work with L.4.2a, and L.5.2a, as well. There is a companion slideshow that will provide rules, practice and examples!

In this activity the learner will be sorting COLORS and is a nice beginner activity for the early learner. It is also great to use with a learner who is more advanced but needs a quick activity that he/she can do independently free of errors. This activity that can help develop a learner's cognitive and perceptual abilities involves sorting colors. The activity can begin by providing the learner with a set of sorting cards that feature different colors (red, blue, green, yellow, etc.). The learner is then asked to sort the cards either by color. For example, the teacher might show the learner a green card and ask the learner to sort all the green cards into one pile, or all the red cards into another pile. The activity can be tailored to the learner's level of ability, gradually introducing more complex colors as the learner becomes more adept at sorting. For younger learners, the cards can feature primary colors, while older learners can be challenged with a more wider range of colors. This activity can be conducted individually or in a group setting, allowing learners to learn from each other and collaborate as they work through the sorting process. It is also a fun and engaging way for learners to develop their sorting skills, which can have practical applications in a variety of fields such as science, engineering, and computer programming. This activity is easy to create. Print, laminate, cut (once) and velcro. You can use a coil binding machine to create a coil bound activity book, or you can use a three hold punch and place in a binder or use binder clips for many years of teaching and learning.
