STEM Task: Falling Slowly Middle Grades Science Experiment

Here is a fun, low-prep science experiment for your middle grades class! It's perfect for a Friday afternoon, day before a holiday, or as part of your regular science curriculum . Students will have a chance to experiment with simple, everyday materials to learn about a science concept in a hands-on manner. They will have to make a prediction before completing the experiment and draw a detailed and labelled diagram after they are done. They will also define relevant vocabulary words and answer a question about what they learned. Falling Slowly: This deceptively simple task asks students to use a piece of paper to design an item that falls as slowly as possible when dropped from a height of 2m. They may be surprised to see that a tiny ripped piece of paper is often the best design! Discussions about gravity and the natural design of helicopter seeds could follow. Student Instructions: You must try to design a paper object that falls as slowly as possible when dropped from 2m. Fold, cut, tear your paper however you want. Test different designs. How to Use: Students can work in small groups. Go over the instructions and materials and give students time to predict before they start the experiment. Review the findings and relevant vocabulary after students have completed their experiment and diagram. Grades to Use With: This activity is great for middle grades (4-7) classrooms or high school special education classes. "The Father of Modern Economics: Adam Smith" - A History Play

This is a great play to help introduce Adam Smith or characteristics of the Free Market system. The play focuses on the life of Adam Smith. It ends by focusing on his ideas for a Free Enterprise system and how it was different from the Mercantilist system of his day. This takes about 20 minutes to do. Plus, you will want to give some time to debrief. In my classes, I have my students take some time to write a journal reflection on what they learned while performing the play. Have fun! And, I hope you enjoy the added touches of humor!

Identifying and Writing Statistical Questions for 6th Grade Math

This activity is designed to target Common Core State Standards 6th Grade Math Statistics 6.SP.A.1 It is a great opener for a unit on statistics and probability as it gets your students thinking about what statistics really are! Students are taught what a statistical question is: a question that has numerical answers that vary. They are shown ways to collect data for statistical questions: survey, using previously collected data such as a census, observations, or measuring. Next, 8 questions are included. Students need to identify if they are statistical questions or not. If they are, students think of how the data might be collected. If they are not, students explain what aspects of a statistical question are missing. Finally, students write 4 questions of their own (one should not be a statistical question) and they trade with a friend to see if they can identify the odd one out. This product would be a great warm-up before my Create Dot Plots and Histograms assignment, as students will need to generate a statistical question for that project. Grades to Use With: This product is designed to target 6th Grade Math Common Core State Standards for Statistics and Probability. However, it can also be used for enrichment in grade 5 classes, or for review in grades 7 and 8. Scientific Method and Critical Thinking Lesson for Middle or High School Students This lesson walks students through correlation and true experiments in an easy-to-understand and engaging manner. 12 different correlation examples are included. The package includes handouts, notes, diagrams , practice questions, a review, and answer key. How to Use: Print a 7 page package for each of your students. Present pages 1-4 on an interactive whiteboard and teach your students the basics of correlation (scatterplots, positive correlation, negative correlation, correlation coefficients, mistaking correlation as causation, media examples, reverse causation, third variables, etc.) as they fill in questions and notes. Then, students can do the practice questions on their own or in small groups (answer key included). Next, present page 6 to explain how to actually find causation in a true experiment : random selection, random assignment, dependent variable, independent variable, experimental group, control group, etc. Finally, students complete a one-page review (answer key included) Grades to Use With: This lesson was designed to be accessible to students as young as grade six all the way through high school. It could be an addition to a science unit about experimental methods, a science fair unit, a grade 8 math unit about scatter plots, or even a psychology class. Standards: CCSS8.SP.A.1 Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association. CCSS8.SP.A.2 Know that straight lines are widely used to model relationships between two quantitative variables. For scatter plots that suggest a linear association, informally fit a straight line, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line.
