Lego-Themed Emotion Regulation Lesson
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, 3, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
In this Lego themed lesson, students will learn about the different zones made up of feelings and energy levels. There are directions for lesson one and two. The first lesson is to teach about the zones and to use a Lego themed poster to help explain them. There is a link to a cute song using Lego characters and teaching about the zones. There are instructions on what students will do next to build a robot, tower or person made up of the color zone(s) they are feeling. For example, if the student is feeling happy and tired, the structure would be made up of green and blue bricks. It is important to buy either Legos or a generic brand of toy bricks for this lesson. After the students create their structures, they can share with a partner, group or class. In the 2nd part of the lesson, students will discuss different types of strategies for how to move from the red, yellow or blue zones and get back to the green zone. They will then build a structure that represents a calm down strategy for them to use when they are in the other zones besides green and need to be focused to learn. For example students can build a cup to represent getting a drink of water. Then students will reflect on their learning by filling out a worksheet. This is a fun, engaging, and hands-on lesson to teach about emotion regulation. It is suitable for kindergarten, first, second and third grades. Each student can bring home the poster to share with their families. Then families can reinforce these concepts at home with their children. CVC Reading book 12
ELA, Language Development, Pre-Reading, Phonics, Reading, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1,
A phonic CVC Words Reading Book for young/SEN/ESL readers. This is the twelfth of 16 phonic reading books to support the blending of CVC words with a short vowel sound, suitable for those who just beginning to read with phonics. These books are intended to be read in sequence for best effect. Find the complete series here: https://teachsimple.com/product/cvc-short-vowel-phonic-reading-books-fully-decodable These first phonic readers are suitable for use with all phonic programmes. These books focus exclusively on sounding out words and they only use the key sight (red/tricky) words a, is, the, of, which are introduced only gradually. These short words should be learned on a flashcard first, but are best put into context as soon as possible when children usually, quickly pick them up. Pictures are deliberately minimal to encourage the child to gain meaning from the text and not to guess. All of the words are introduced and then met again in subsequent readers, to help develop confidence and fluency. The book s begins with just a few words being introduced. For example, this book CVC Reading book 12 uses the words a, the, fox, red, hen, big, bad, met, get, can, run, not, etc. The whole scope and sequence is included in the pack for your reference. Each book lists the sight word/s being used in that book at the beginning. There is also a short introduction to the book to be read by the teacher and discussed with the child. These introductions help to make up for the lack of words in the book and help parents and teachers to have a basis for discussion with the child, so aiding reading comprehension. I have based the stories around loveable characters with whom the children quickly identify: farmer Tom with his animals, his wife, his son Sam and daughter, Pam, his dog, Jiff and the cat. Careful use of pictures helps to make up for the lack of words, while telling a little story - rather than having stilted phonic readers. Due to the systematic, phonetic nature of these books, they are highly suitable for special needs children who have failed with other programmes. Many parents have told me they wished they had found these books sooner, or had found them at all, as they would have been ideal for their struggling reader. They have been thoroughly tested by my current pupils all of whom are boys. Even my nine-year old boy pupil loves them. They can also be used with young EFL/ESL learners.

Non-identical Animal Matching
Special Resources, ELA, Language Development, Pre-Reading, Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Activities
Matching games build visual discrimination, classification, and critical thinking skills in young learners. This set takes matching a step further by featuring non-identical images that must be sorted based on conceptual relationships. With an engaging farm animal theme, students will delight in making connections between like animals. The materials include 6 base boards, each with 4-5 detailed farm animal pictures. Rather than matching identical pairs, students must categorize the animals by traits like species, color, or baby/adult. Sort pigs, cows, sheep, chickens, horses and more using visual cues like number of legs, color of fur, or size. Because the images vary slightly, students must look beyond basic appearance to understand how the animals are related fundamentally. This challenges learners to classify concepts at a deeper level. Worksheets can be used independently, in small groups, or whole class. The open-ended format allows for sorting by multiple attributes. Laminated boards and animal cut-outs enable reuse for different categorization each time. Activities build visual discrimination, flexible thinking, and vocabulary as students explain their sorting rationale. Moving the pieces enhances motor skills too. This engaging game delivers cognitive growth in a hands-on way. This set comes with 6 base boards each with 4-5 farm animal pictures. Clipart images courtesy of Kari Bolt Children's Illustrator:
