This is a Fractions Task Packet for your 3rd grade math students. Students will explore fractions of a whole and fractions of a set. There are 2 different tasks included: 1. The Birthday Cake – You are having a birthday party! You invited all your friends to your party, but you are not sure how many of them will come. You plan on cutting your cake into equal pieces, so everyone gets the same sized piece. Create at least 4 scenarios in which you show the cake, how it was cut, how many total pieces were eaten, and what FRACTION of the cake each friend ate. Things to consider: · How many friends showed up at the party? · How many pieces did you cut your cake into (the denominator)? · What shape do you want your cake to be? · How will you cut the cake so the pieces will be equal? · Do YOU get a piece of cake? · If everyone gets a piece of cake, will there be any left over? If there is cake left over, what fraction is left? 2. Color the Cars – Sam works in a car factory. His job is to paint all the cars after they’ve been built. To keep his job exciting, he paints the cars different colors every day. Using the sets of cars, show how Sam may have painted the cars on 4 different days. · You must color each set of cars using 3 or more colors (one color per car). · No two sets of cars can be the same. Reading Made Simple — Free Long Vowels Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Reading Made Simple for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. Tested by real children: One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' When I hear these reviews, I know that I have succeeded in my aim to write a phonics curriculum that can help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. Each workbook offers a gentle mix of activities built around the target sound. Children will read short passages that practise the new sound alongside words from sounds already taught, track and identify the sound within words to support both reading and spelling, practise spelling and sentence writing, and work through simple editing exercises where they spot and correct mistakes. These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. There is no obligation and no right or wrong way to use them. To print: print double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Fold in half to create your A5 booklet. The answer page at the back is optional. One sheet of paper. One sound. Everything a child needs to practise, consolidate and grow in confidence.

Great for springtime but can be used all year long! ✏ DIRECTIONS FOR USE Three different games/activities included. For articulation groups or individual therapy. 1. Dice Word Drill Place a regular dice in your egg carton with your overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box and open it. Wherever the dice lands, the student must say the corresponding word however many times the dice says. For example, if the student shakes the box and the dice lands on five under the word “cake,” the student must say the word “cake” five times. •Student can use the Monitoring Card to check off the words they have already said and to rate their productions. •To use Sentence Strips with this activity , play as directed above except instead of saying the word only, they must say it in a sentence. 2. Word Match-Up Cut up the little “match-up” word squares and place one in your egg carton with the corresponding overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box and open it. The student is trying to make the little picture land in the space that matches with the same picture in the top overlay. If the little picture lands under a word that doesn’t match, the student must say that word and try again until they match. Once they get the right match, the student can use the Monitoring Card to check off the word. Repeat until all words have been matched. 3. Picture Search Cut up the little “match-up” word squares and place one in your egg carton with the corresponding overlay affixed to the top. Have the student shake up the box but do not open it. Use the sentence strips to guess where the picture will be. Have them ask, “Where is the ____?” “Is it under the ___?”. If they get it wrong, try again. If they guess right, use the sentence strip, “I found the ____!” ♥ I suggest printing on card stock and laminating. Use tape to affix overlay to egg carton. Line Graph Assessment : Real-Life Math Problem for a Graphing Unit This learning resource is perfect for educators teaching general math classes to grade 5-8, or high school special education classes with applied mathematics. It focuses on enhancing students' graphing and interpretation skills through a real-life scenario - a bike ride. How to Use: I used this task as a summative assessment at the end of my line graphing unit. Students had learned how to make line graphs, how to determine an appropriate scale, how to determine if the data is continuous or discrete and if the points of data should be joined, and how to read and interpret line graphs. This simple task melds all of those skills into one, easy-to-mark assessment . It allowed me to accurately assess my students' learning from the whole unit and was a great artifact to use for report card writing or parent conferences. Students are given the data from a bike ride (hours biked vs kilometers travelled), and they need to create a line graph with all of the appropriate features. Then, they will answer questions to determine their ability to interpret the data they have been given. Evaluation Areas: Determining logical vertical and horizontal scales and constructing accurately labelled line graphs/plots. Understanding how data is collected. Differentiating between discrete and continuous data. Interpreting line graphs/plots effectively. Making reasoned conclusions from specific sets of data. Identifying fractional/decimal information between different data points. Grades to Use With: This assessment is designed for students in grades 5-8 or in high school special education classes.
