This product covers the 2016 Virginia (VA) Standards of Learning (SOL) 3.9 The student will a) tell time to the nearest minute, using analog and digital clocks; b) solve practical problems related to elapsed time in one-hour increments within a 12- hour period; and c) identify equivalent periods of time and solve practical problems related to equivalent periods of time. (note that this will also work for the 2023 VA SOL 3.MG.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of time to the nearest minute and solve single-step contextual problems involving elapsed time in one-hour increments within a 12-hour period.) It contains notes pages on reading clocks, the types of clocks, and telling time to the nearest minute. It also has notes pages on elapsed time to the nearest hour and minute. It also goes over equivalent time (half past = 30 minutes, 7 days = a week, etc) It also has notes pages on time concepts that are difficult for students to grasp: BC/BCE/AD/CE and Leap Year. There are practice pages for each topic, with an answer key included. The notes pages come in two sizes. The first size is a full-page size. You can print them as-is, or you can print them two to a pages. This is what I do as it saves on paper and the sheets will fit in a notebook. The second size is formatted to fit on a standard composition notebook page. Additionally, there are two links included in the pdf: one which opens a digital version of the notes, and another that opens a slide show version, optimized for a projector or interactive board. In both cases, which you click the link, you will be prompted to make a copy, which you can then use with Google Slides or download and use with Keynote or PowerPoint. What's included? In this Hearing VS. Listening lesson, students will understand that hearing is a passive skill whereas listening is a more active social skill. There are descriptions of the differences between the two with a slide for students to guess 6 sounds (answers are in the slide notes) -this is highly engaging for students. Then students will do an activity with partners to listen and follow instructions, ask questions, and listen to feedback about a drawing activity (drawings A and B are on slides 8 and 9). This is a great lesson to teach the skills of listening and to reference in the future when students need to be reminded of the key elements of listening versus just hearing. This is also a great preview for students to practice role-playing about how to listen to one another.
