Brain Burners Word Problems Packet

Brain Burners Word Problems Packet
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Order Of Operations, Place Value, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.

The Flip Flop Fiasco

The Flip Flop Fiasco
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

The Flip Flop Fiasco is an exciting math activity that your students will enjoy. Here is the breakdown of the scenario students will be prompted with: All the kids in our class wore flip flops last Friday. There were so many stubbed toes that our teacher called the day a ‘fiasco’! At the end of the day, our teacher sat down to find out just how many bandages she’d used from her box, which had 1,000 bandages in it at the beginning of the day. Using the following information, the attached work-mat, and your mathematical genius, can you figure out how many bandages our teacher used and how many are left in her box? o Our class usually has 26 students but 3 were absent. o During first recess, the following fiascos occurred… 1. 12 students stubbed two of their toes. 2. 8 students stubbed three. 3. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o During second recess, things got really bad… 1. 9 students stubbed 3 of their toes. 2. 7 students stubbed four. 3. 5 students stubbed all the toes on their left feet. 4. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o And last recess was the worst… 1. 6 students stubbed all the toes on their right feet. 2. 8 students stubbed 7 of their toes. 3. The rest of the students stubbed all the toes on both feet! Extensions (If you want to impress your teacher) o What if our teacher’s box had started with 500 bandages? How many would she have left after our flip flip ‘fiasco’? o What if twice as many toes had been stubbed? How many bandages would our teacher have used? How many would she have had left in a box of 1,000? ***Answer key included

Two Step Word Problems Activity Packet

Two Step Word Problems Activity Packet
Math, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Division, Multiplication, Grade 3, 4, Word Problems, Worksheets & Printables

Have your students just started learning about two-step word problems? Have they mastered the skill? Do you have students in your classroom who could use additional practice to sharpen their word problem skills? This is aTwo Step Word Problems Activity Packetfor your 3rd and 4th grade students. These pages include 28 word problems, all of which will require students to do two steps in order to find a solution. Problems involve addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. o They are best used near the END OF THIRD GRADE, after students have practiced (and hopefully mastered) all addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division concepts in the common core. OR they can be used as review at the BEGINNING OF FOURTH GRADE! o There are many ways to use these pages! I use them as daily problems for students to solve during self-starters/morning work. They may also be used in centers , as early finisher pages, or as worksheets during math instruction. o If you’d like, you can have your students circle the ÷ + x – on each page to show which process(es) they used. o It is important that students be able to pick out two steps to each problem. NOTE: The two steps they choose may be different than those shown in the answer key! o There is no rhyme or reason to the order in which the problems are organized. o Some problems are more challenging than others. I leave it up to your judgment in deciding which are best for your particular class. Answer key included. I hope you enjoy! Here’s a realistic and engaging way to teach upper elementary pupils in grades 3-6 about budgeting while introducing some basic financial literacy too! How to Use: 1) Each student will be assigned a monthly budget (from $1,700 all the way to $5,000). 2) They select one of three options (low, medium, pricey) for each spending category: housing, eating, transportation, technology, & clothing. They might find that they have to change their choices as they move through the process. Making sacrifices is part of budgeting in real life too! 3) Students add up the amounts they spend and calculate how much they can save per month (and throughout the entire year). 4) They pick what luxury option they would save for over time: a car, a video game system, a vacation, or a house. This lesson is full of fun and bright visuals and charts that are well-organized to ensure that this math learning is accessible to all the students in your class! Math skills needed: Addition - up to 1,000 Subtraction - 4-digit numbers Multiplication - 4-digit numbers by 12 Grades to Use With: This lessons is designed to be accessible to younger students in the elementary years (grades 3-6) because it uses simple math skills and bright and engaging visuals. It could also be an excellent resource for a high school special education classroom!
