Everyone is talking about rising interest rates these days. But why does it matter? Should our students learn about this? Yes! Here's a complete ready-to-go lesson for high school students in math class, life skills, home economics, or career and personal planning. It will teach them all about buying a home, getting a mortgage, and how mortgage payments are calculated using interest rates. 1) First, there is a handout explaining all the relevant home-buying vocabulary: from down payment and mortgage to interest and principal. There is a complete handout or a fill-in-the-blanks version: you choose what is best for your students! 2) Then, there is a second sheet with a sample scenario of what happens when interest rates rise and people have to renew their mortgage. This clearly shows, step by step, how mortgage payments can rise by hundreds or thousands of dollars even if you live in the exact same place. This handout also has completed or fill-in-the-blank versions for you to pick from. 3) Next, there is a matching worksheet where students match all the home buying words to their definitions. 4) Finally, there is a math worksheet for students to complete. It has 10 questions for students to calculate themselves about down payments, mortgage payments and rising interest rates. Math skills required are multiplying and dividing with numbers up to 6 digits and working with percents written as a decimal. For example calculating the interest payment on a $300,000 mortgage at 3% would be done: 300,000 x 0.03 All the questions are designed to have round numbers and simply calculations whenever possible. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for high school students in grades 8-12: from special education to regular home economics classes. Brain Burners Word Problems Packet

Brain Burners Word Problems Packet
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Order Of Operations, Place Value, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.

Multiplication with Mixed Numbers

Multiplication with Mixed Numbers
Common Core, Math, Fractions, Multiplication and Division, Grade 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Word Problems

This set of worksheets provides a structured approach to become proficient with multiplying mixed numbers. The material is organized into eight sets of differentiated material: Set 1. Students practice the basic skill of converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. Set 2. Match up mixed numbers and improper fractions, reinforcing the work of Set 1. These first two sets of worksheets are groundwork for the following sets. Set 3. Multiplying mixed numbers and integers: This is used as an introduction to multiplication of mixed numbers as there is only one number to convert to a fraction and some simple cancelling down and simplification . Set 4. Students now multiply mixed numbers with fractions. Set 5. This utilizes the Open Array Model, a visual representation, to support the multiplication of two mixed numbers. Set 6. Multiplication of two mixed numbers without the aid of visual support. Set 7. A mix of multiplication problems involving mixed numbers and integers, fractions, and mixed numbers. Set 8. Word Problems. Most sets offer two difficulty levels. The second level introduces larger denominators and integers, providing an extra challenge for advanced learners or those ready to push their skills further. Students get to practice cross-multiplication, finding common denominators, applying the distributive property, and reducing fractions to their simplest form. How Many worksheets exactly ? The worksheets are virtually limitless. With a click of a button, numbers are randomized, which means that each worksheet is different. These worksheets are ideal not just for class time practice but also for math centers, end-of-lesson activities, or as resources for substitute teachers, homework assignments, requiring minimal instructions ... and there is no preparation - CLICK PRINT and GO Answers are generated automatically with each new worksheet. Interactive Teaching Pages The Teaching Pages, designed for use with Interactive Whiteboards, help to introduce the content of the worksheets for the whole class. Compatibility Note It is essential to note that these resources can be downloaded as PDF documents. They operate with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on both Windows and Mac. The Flip Flop Fiasco
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets

The Flip Flop Fiasco is an exciting math activity that your students will enjoy. Here is the breakdown of the scenario students will be prompted with: All the kids in our class wore flip flops last Friday. There were so many stubbed toes that our teacher called the day a ‘fiasco’! At the end of the day, our teacher sat down to find out just how many bandages she’d used from her box, which had 1,000 bandages in it at the beginning of the day. Using the following information, the attached work-mat, and your mathematical genius, can you figure out how many bandages our teacher used and how many are left in her box? o Our class usually has 26 students but 3 were absent. o During first recess, the following fiascos occurred… 1. 12 students stubbed two of their toes. 2. 8 students stubbed three. 3. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o During second recess, things got really bad… 1. 9 students stubbed 3 of their toes. 2. 7 students stubbed four. 3. 5 students stubbed all the toes on their left feet. 4. The rest of the students didn’t stub any toes. o And last recess was the worst… 1. 6 students stubbed all the toes on their right feet. 2. 8 students stubbed 7 of their toes. 3. The rest of the students stubbed all the toes on both feet! Extensions (If you want to impress your teacher) o What if our teacher’s box had started with 500 bandages? How many would she have left after our flip flip ‘fiasco’? o What if twice as many toes had been stubbed? How many bandages would our teacher have used? How many would she have had left in a box of 1,000? ***Answer key included

Geometry Project: Park Design with Area, Perimeter, and Volume (with Budgeting!)

Geometry Project: Park Design with Area, Perimeter, and Volume (with Budgeting!)
Math, Decimals, Multiplication and Division, Division, Money, Geometry, Measurements, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities, Projects

This project allows students to apply their knowledge of perimeter, area, volume, and decimal calculations to a realistic and creative situation. They are tasked with designing a new park that includes areas for swimming, playing (skate park, playground, and grass), eating, and walking. They use their knowledge of perimeter when considering the size and shape of their park and the amount of fencing required. Every student is assigned the same perimeter. This constraint ensures your students can accurately calculate perimeter, it makes some of the marking easier for you, and it will help stimulate a discussion about the relationship between perimeter and area. Although all the perimeters are the same, the areas of your students' parks can be vastly different depending on the shape chosen! They use their knowledge of area when dividing the park up into sections for different activities. An understanding of volume is used when considering filling the pool. Finally, they use their knowledge of decimal calculations when determining the final price of the entire project. Each different section has a different cost (unit rate). For example, paths are much cheaper than a playground, and grassy areas cost less than a swimming pool. I asked my students to calculate by hand, but you could allow yours to use a calculator as well. This project requires students to use creative and logical thinking skills, organization, careful calculating methods, and neat drawing/colouring. It is a great project to use as a summative assessment or to show parents at conferences. Grades to Use With: This math project could work in grades 4-8 in regular math classes. It could also be used in high school special education classes.
